Good read suggestion while in Vancouver Island

We will be visiting Vancouver Island in September. I enjoy reading non fiction books that are set in the areas I am traveling through. Does anyone have any thought on books that are set in Vancouver Island, Vancouver or Victoria ? Thanks

The Concubine's Children by Denise Chong is an outstanding book.

I am privileged to know some of the people who feature in the book. The author's sister is a friend of ours, and we have met the author herself.

Their mother is the little girl who had such a cruel childhood. If you met her now, you would never guess what she'd been through. She's a talented, intelligent, articulate, attractive, vibrant woman in her seventies.

We felt very honoured when she autographed our copy of the book, using both her Chinese and English names.

There are dozens of good non fiction books but anything by Jack Hodgins is particularly good. (about Vancouver Island anyway) He grew up on the Island and his books are excellent. He is the winner of numerous awards so I think his books would be easy to find.

"A Year on Planet Alzheimer" by Carolyn Steele is a non-fiction account of a British woman and her young son who come to Canada and end up on Vancouver Island for a while. She now owns a B&B in Ontario. It's quite well-written; I have some mixed feelings about the author and her opinions but the book is worth a read.
