Drive to Horseshoe Bay on the Sea to Sky Highway #99 (about 1.5 to 2 hrs); take the Ferry at Horseshoe Bay to Nanaimo, (about 3-4 hours including wait time); drive from Nanaimo to Victoria on Island Highway, (about 2 hrs). All told about 6-7 hours from start to finish.

This is sure "travel"! And what makes it even more exciting is that I am doing that on 12/24!

GaryA - wouldn't it be faster to drive to Tsawassen and take the ferry from there (avoiding the driving from Nanaimo to Victoria)???

It probably would be - though the fact that 'hoiyini' is going on the 24th tends to change some of the factors. Early afternoon of the 24th - even from noon on - is like rush hour the rest of the year as people leave work early and rush to get places. It could easily mean 2 hours drive from Horseshoe Bay to Tsawassen so I still reccomend going via Nanaimo. the scenery is better that way as well.

Assuming you don't want to take the bus, if that is still an option, I would add that I would get a ferry reservation for that day. Also check to make sure snow isn't on the Malahat (usually there isn't) if driving down from Nanaimo.

Thanks for all your replies.
Didn't know the Canadians worked that hard. Our origianl plan is to stay in Vancouver for 4 days after Whistler. But everyone says Victoria is a must. So we decided to bite the bullet, go directly from Whistle to Victoria, then Vancouver - so we won't miss the flight for sure.
We didn't plan to rent a car, since it would useless at the destinations. If just Whistler to Vancouver, we may take a bus like grayhound - heard it was nice. But Victoria...
Enough info for you guys to plan my perfect trip?

April - I'd worry more about the possibility of snow on the drive down from Whistler than on the Malahat.

Hoiyini - if you are renting a car and driving, I highly suggest that you make a ferry reservation right now for December 24th - that's probably the busiest day of the year for ferry traffic.

True, but snow at Whistler might be unavoidable while around Victoria if snow is going to fall anywhere, it will often dump down heavier on the Malahat.

You can also try Greyhound, hoiyini, but they don't have a schedule yet for that late in the year. Right now they leave from Whistler about 5 times a day, $105 return or half that one way.

I agree with April - it is well worth paying the $10 reservation fee for BC ferries to guarantee yourself a spot on the ferry.
