foreign films in Toronto
 

Does anyone know which theaters in Toronto specialize in foreign and art films? If so, which and where?

A good bet is Cinematheque Ontario (a division of the Toronto International Film Festival Group). They screen at Jackman Hall at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Only members can order on-line, but 3 days in advance non-members can go to the advance box office at 2 Carlton St (at Yonge) or call 416-968-FILM for tickets. For more info, go to:

Probably the Carleton, on Carlton Street, at Yonge.

But the theatre is being used for university casses, too.

I'll try to check further on this today.

All I need to do is read a newspaper, which Ii will do later this morning, and remember to come back here.

The Mount Pleaseant Theatre shows some low-audience films, although thelast one I noticed was there was Owning Mohoney, which is a Candian movie.

Your choice of movie theatres showing foreign and art films (well, in Toronto, most films are foireign, coming from theUSA, but leaving that aside...) include the Cinematheque already mentioned, but praised by a film major from the University of Toronto I just talked with, plus:

Royal, in Little Italy
Mount Pleasant and Regent, both on Mount Pleasant Road, in north toronto.
Kingsway, in Etobicoke, very close to the Royal York subway station.the Carelteon, at Carlton/College and Yonge StreetBloor Cinema, near Bathurst on Bloor St. West
And some more.

At the bottom opf the movie theatre listing page in The Globe and Mail there's a list of indpoependent theatres, most of which show a mix of second-run Hollywood shows, arty-foreign films, and a few second-rate current movies, like Kill Bill.

And I never thought about it, but films coming from this country would be foreign in Canada. I apologize for the large volume of crap we're sending up North. (Then again, you gave us Celine Dion!)

But she really is a fine person, and she has a lot of fans in Canada, as proven at the recent funeral of her father. Huge attendence, as if the people were part of the family.

MAny US mopvies are filmed here, and if you are a serious movie fan, Hollywood and otherwise, you might want to visit the Distillery District, near the lake, near Parliamnet Street and Front Street. It's played the part of many cities in more than a dozen movies, and, in addityion to acting as a movie set has some good to great art galleries (Sandra Ainsley for glass art), a couple of good restaurants, an excellent bakery, a good coffee bar, and a great place to have digital images made into prints.
