Family Trip to Canadian Rockies
 

Looking forward to our trip to the Canadian Rockies later this month -- we relied a lot on these posts for our planning. We will have one week, as follows: Lake Louise (Lake Louise Inn) for 3 nights, Jasper (Overlander Lodge) for 3 nights, and Banff (Hidden Ridge Chalets) for 1 night. We are a family of 5, including 3 kids ages 8 to 14. We obviously want to take advantage of the scenery, so we want to do some short hikes -- given the age of our youngest, we have to stay relatively easy. Some questions: any recommendations for good family hikes in these areas, and what should we expect for weather? Can we hike in shorts and carry a fleece top, or is it going to be colder than that? Finally, anything that's a must see for a family or anything in our reservations that we should reconsider? Thanks again for all your great info.

Bob: You *do* know that the Overlander Lodge is outside of Jasper National Park? It's a good 35 - 40 mins from the Townsite.

If you are driving the Banff-Jasper Highway, be sure to take in the Icefields - they are at about the half way point. Lots of good hiking trails in both Banff and Jasper. In Banff, check out the Info center on Banff Avenue - it's on your right at a set of lights and just before you cross a short bridge. over the Bow River. There is a similar center in Jasper.

Hi there, we just got back from a long weekend in Jasper with our 5 month old. Obviously he did the hikes while carried in a baby carrier, but the ones I think you would enjoy are:<BR><BR>Maligne Canyon<BR>Mt Edith Cavell<BR>small hike at Maligne Lake<BR>Valley of Five Lakes<BR><BR>There are also lots of small hikes near the townsite at Patricia and Pyrimid Lakes, but we ran out of time.<BR><BR>The tram is VERY worth the money, and once you get up top you can hike up to the summit. It might be a bit much for your 5 year old, but even the view from the little lodge is excellent.

We hiked in August with our 2 children. We always wore shorts but carried fleece vests, anoraks, and water in our backpacks. Sometimes we would take off and put back on our vests three times in one hike. The only time I wished I had on long pants was on the glacier. BRR cold.
