expensive Airfare to Canada

In the last month, ticket prices going form the US to Cnada have risen dramtically. It will cost me more roundtrip from New York to Toronto than roundtrip New York to Heathrow. It's outrageous. Has anyone else experienced this?

Oh, definitely!! We flew BOS to NYC, return, during Christmas week for $79pp. We just paid $192pp for BOS to TO!! And I was scanning for fares for a West Coast visit in the spring...just over $200 for SFO, just under $400 for Vancouver! arrrgghhhh!

Hi, I think that is partly the product of "Air Canada" having such a monopoly in that country.

You might consider flying to Buffalo and then renting a car to drive the last 100-ish miles to Toronto.

Airline prices are a fickle thing.

Hi Bobbie, The price of flights between NY and Toronto swings up and down frequently. I have flown to Buffalo and drove (it's quick and easy, about 2 hours and once you get past Buffalo you're not in the snow belt so winter storms are not a major issue with the drive). I also tend to find deals on the american airlines and air canada websites. I travel this route all the time and have paid between $110 and $190 in the last year. When it goes over that range I go to Buffalo and drive.

It's me again. I actutally paid the same $192 [including taxes] for my roundtrip NYC-Toronto. The taxes kill, worse, it seems for canadian flights. At least I am not the only one who is expereincing this.
I hope the price fluctuates down before President's Day weekend.
I did check american airlines but the best I saw as continental.
If anyone sees anything, please post it.

my sister flys up to Calgary from NY frequently and always finds the cheapest rated at Hotwire.

Try also checking out Air Canada's website and signing up for websaver email, which is sent out every Wed for flights that weekend. Prices within Canada and bewteen Canadian cities and various US cities. Prices are generally very good, but taxes are high, as per the above post. But if you find one in Canadian dollars it is even cheap when you convert to U.S. They are happy to send to U.S. citizens as well.

Bobbi, please do us all a favor and tell us who you get the round trip airfare NYC to Heathrow for $199. I want it!!!

Please tell me how I can get airfares in Canadian dollars? My son goes to school in Canada and everytime we buy his tickets from Air Canada/United-they insist that I buy the tickets in American dollars(even though the ticket originates in Canada)?Thanks-

Sorry it took me so long to tell that poster who asked.
Go to united.com, look for international e-fare specials, and you'll see NYC - Heathrow for $170.00
I signed up for Air Canada web saver prices and their prices dont change too much.

Debbie, if your son goes to a ticket/travel agent in Canada he will have no problem getting the tickets in canadian money for you :).

The next time I go to Canada, i think I will do it this way. Jet Blue each way to Buffalo is 34.00 [ I am not kidding ], and then drive or bus it to Toronto. ;)

Some of Air Cda's fares came down quite a bit recently. Anyone looking for fares still, check out the AC website. However, be warned that your schedule may be changed as it seems like they are cancelling quite a few flights.

This week I received two calls from them. One to change my flight (BOS-YVR) in April due to a cancelled flight. The other call was also for a cancelled flight for another trip in August. Now I have 2 connections to get to YVR (Montreal AND Toronto!). Ridiculous!! I hate the monopoly that AC has.
