Eating in Nova Scotia, Maritimes
 

Saturday we depart for a tour of Nova Scotia and the Maritimes. This is with Grand Circle departing from Boston for two weeks...Bar Harbor, Campobello, St. Andrews, Bay of Fundy, Kingsbrae Garden, St. John, Salisbury, Prince Edward Island, Charlottetown, Anne of Green Gables museum, Wood Island, Caribou, Pictou, Baddeck, Cape Breton Nat'l pk, Auld's Cove, Halifax, Peggy's Cove, Grand Pre Hist. Pk, Digby, St. John, Bangor, Portland, Boston.

Some meals are provided but many are not. So any suggestions would be welcome. Here's where...lunch and dinner Bar Harbor, lunch and dinner St. Andrews, lunch maybe after Bay of Fundy cruise, dinner Charlottetown, lunch maybe Silver Bush, dinner Charlottetown, lunch maybe Pictou, dinner Halifax, lunch Peggy's Cove, dinner Halifax.

Eating tips anyone out there...mat54, Tanyalynn, OceanBreeze1, juliae_mei?

I had a delicious dinner in Halifax at The Press Gang Restaurant. It is located in the 2nd oldest building in Halifax. Pricey but very good! There is a restaurant in Peggy's Cove but it is very busy with tourists and food is so-so if I recall---but the warm ginger bread dessert was excellent.

think we are on the same trip! Looking forward to the answers you get...please share.

I can recommend three restaurants in Halifax:

- Chives , 1537 Barrington St. (www.chives.ca)

- aMano, Bishop's Landing on Lower Water St. (www.ristoranteamano.ca)

- The Bicycle Thief, also at Bishop's Landing on Lower Water (http://bicyclethief.ca)

The latter two are owned by the Bertossi family. They have recently morphed one of their other restaurants on Spring Garden Road into a new place called La Frasca (http://lafrasca.ca) I haven't been there yet, but aim to do so in the coming weeks.

Peggys's Cove — the Sou'Wester is pretty much your only option, as far as I can recollect (www.peggys-cove.com), and I agree with Scotia's assessment, above: the food is so-so, save for the warm gingerbread.

There are three places in Halifax that I steer clear of: Salty's on the waterfront, McKelvies, and The Five Fishermen.

Oh, I forgot to mention. You should definitely make reservations for those three Halifax restos I suggested.

Ozarksbill...you mention stopping at Grand Pre National Park. There are excellent restaurants in nearby town of Wolfville, but the Evangeline Diner on Highway #1 has excellent lobster sandwiches for only $7.00 approximately!

I had a DELICIOUS lobster thermador dinner at Salty's on the waterfront in Halifax - would highly recommend. Sit on the second floor by the window and you'll have great views of the water.

I saw a TV ad last night for McDonald's "McLobster Roll" and it looked really good! May be enough for me to overcome my lifelong aversion to Micky D's! ((H))

We have been having a hard time deciding where to go for an 8 day trip in September. Yesterday I started researching the idea of northern ME/Campabello to New Brunswick. I will be interested in any recommendations you have for these areas after your trip.
