driving from settle to vancouver

Hi all,

does anybody know if snow chain is needed if driving from settle to vancouver during the rainy and snowy season ?
Robyn Oct 22nd, 2002 03:24 PM

Never.

gary Oct 22nd, 2002 05:02 PM

Well virtually never. On the other hand we're all assuming you're talking about Seattle here. "Settle' on the other hand might be up in the mountains and then perhaps snow tires might be a good idea.

To Gary - you give lots of good advice on this site - was it really necessary to make a comment about a simple typo?

gary Oct 22nd, 2002 06:42 PM

Sorry, but if you havn't noticed I have a wierd sence of humor at times. And I've been given a bit of static about my typos as weell.

cindy Oct 23rd, 2002 04:43 AM

Typos, Gary? You??
darlene Oct 23rd, 2002 03:09 PM

Chains? ha ha very funny! (now that I've said that we'll probably get the worst snow fall in history!)

Robyn Oct 23rd, 2002 09:30 PM

Actually, according to my geography prof, Vancouver and the surrounding region is supposed to experience a drought this winter... El Nino #2 if you will.

Actually XXX in Gary's defense I don't think its a "simple typo". As he mispelled Seatlle twice, once in the subject line and once in his message.

Settle Down!

Mary Ann Oct 25th, 2002 02:29 PM

Strong winds and heavy rain are fairly common in late November, December and sometimes January, otherwise, the "wet" coast has a gentle climate --- most recently they have had nothing but fabulous sunny days and a tiny bit of rain. It's true that the predictions are for a very dry winter.

Since the town of Settle is located in the Yorkshire Dales ( check it out ), I think pontoons are more in order than 'snow chain'.

PS. Pontoons might save time at the Peace Arch crossing as well.

How long does it generally take (these days with heightened security) to drive between Seattle & Vancouver, including the border crossing? Thanks all!

John Nov 11th, 2002 01:40 PM

Three hours plus border lineup is a good rule of thumb. It depends on where in Seattle you're starting and where in Vancouver you're going, or v.v.

Border delays can be minimal to unbelievable, depending on your luck. Our last few times it's been relatively easy northbound (under 20 min.) and just horrendous southbound (1-3 hours.) Weekends and holidays are the worst. Listen to the radio in Vancouver for regular border delay updates, or else plan on crossing in the middle of the night.
