Driving from Seattle to Kelwona
 

We are planning on flying from LA to Seattle and renting a car in Seattle to drive to see our daughter in Kelowna, Canada. Will we have problems driving a rental across the border? What is the best route from Seattle to Kelowna? We will be staying in Kelowna for 10 days.

Drive north from seattle on the I-5, turn off in Bellingham heading towards Sumas. Cross the border at Sumas, Its a couple miles to the 401(freeway heading east). Go east till Hope B.C. Keep going east until you reach the turnoff for the Coquilla hwy and head to Merrit(Probably will be one of the most scenic drives you have ever done). At merritt you turn off and take the Okanagan connector to kelowna. You leave the connector about 10 km ( get used to Kilometers- Approx 0.6 miles) south of Kelowna. Just follow the signs. Will be easy

Once you are on the site click on TRAVEL at the top of the page, then MAPS and GUIDES shown on the left hand side, then click on TRIP TIK Travel Planner. You can enter the exact address you are leaving from (ie SEATAC airport) and then the address of your daughter in Kelowna. It will even tell you how long the trip will take and you can change your route if you don't want to take the one they show. You can also print out the map you make.
There won't be a problem taking a rental car across the border just make sure you have all the rental papers with you and of course your passport.

I don't know when you are going and I am sure your daughter has told you - but right now due to the forest fires part of the highway is closed and until they get things under control it will remain closed. Hopefully you won't be visiting in the very near future and things will be back to normal.

Things are now back to normal...fires are under control, no loss of life or injury, crisis averted and highway open.(Still slow as molasses across the bridge, but open...)
