Toronto Hotel during Film Festival

My son and I will be in Toronto during the Film Festival and are looking for a nice hotel in a good area spending no more than $240-$250 per night. This is the first time for the two of us. He is there on business and I am just tagging along so I am also interested in some nice restaurants and perhaps some suggestions on seeing some films. Thanks.

Hello, I would stay near Bloor Street ,
many Festival theaters are near by as well as restaurants and shops.
Harbourfront is a bit too far.
You may have to hurry with reservation - it is a busy time!
I don't know the rates but Intercontinental, Sutton Place, Hyatt,
Marriott..come to mind.
Google hotels in Toronto in Yorkville .

Whichever you choose, book fast-this is huge event in the city and good hotels, like Danon's, book fast! You may want to try some off the strip where most of the TIFF action takes place if those are full. Try the Fairmont Royal York or the Delta or the Harbourfront if no luck at Danon's ideas.

Other possibilities are:
Holiday Inn at Bloor and Spadina (near U of T)
Strathcona Hotel
Novotel on the Esplanade
Marriott at the Eaton Centre (probably too $$$)

Also, you could try Priceline -- I know a couple of people who got rooms at the Sheraton across from city hall for great prices!

For tips on films, you might want to look at the festival film site and read the press releases. Local papers have items on what will be playing as the news is released in the entertainment pages. http://www.tiff07.ca/
www.thestar.ca (the Toronto Star dail)

Personally, I think it's difficult to suggest a film for someone you don't know but there is definitely something for every taste at the festival.

People watching during the festival is interesting - sit on the rocks along Cumberland Avenue or find a spot in the Starbucks on Yorkville and you're likely to see a "star". Quite often a face you recognize but you don't know the name - if you're like me. Watch the creepy professional autograph seekers with their big books of 8 x 10 glossies.

Sally, you made me laugh-I live and work in The Annex (the neighbourhood or adjacent to) of the TIFF. My colleagues and I went out to peek at the peolpe-watching last year and were much more amused by the autograph seekers and other oddball fans than the celebs themselves. The celebs look just like ordinary folk (often shorter, somehow than one imagined...). But some of those fans! whew, anything but ordinary!

My son ended up booking us at the Grand Hotel. I am still interested in some restaurant suggestions and perhaps some places to visit as I haven't been to Toronto in 20 years. Thanks again.
