safe to drive by myself? road conditions ok?

You'll be driving along the Trans Canada highway #1 for most of the way - it's a major route - so yes, unless you are driving in January and there is a huge blizzard, road conditions are good - well - except for those places where there is construction (road resurfacing, bridge upgrading etc) - the usual stuff.

Just wanted to add -
Calgary to Banff and then a bit further is four lane highway, divided most of the way. Through the main part of the mountain parks the highway is two lane undivided. In BC (Field to Kelowna)the highway is mostly two lane undivided but with occasional passing lanes. All the highways have generous shoulders and are well equipped with signs.

thanks - yeah, i was only concerned about actual road conditions - i'm going next week - used to los angeles roads - hence my query. always major work going on here.

There is a major construction project between the Yoho Park boundary and the eastern side of Golden, BC.
The road is safe, but expect slow traffic and delays for road equipment.

The route as far as Golden is alternately 4 lane and good 2 lane road.
West of Golden the road is slower but the scenery is eye popping.
Rogers Pass is in the middle of Glacier Natiional Park which has some spectacular peaks. You may want to stop at the visitor center for a view or two before pushing on toward Revelstoke.

Also, as you drive that route, I hope you have time to stop by Lake Louise and Emerald Lake. They are trip objectives within themselves.

Also Moraine lake and Takkakaw Falls are beautiful as well, but a little farther off of the main road.

Takkakaw is one of the most spectacular alpine waterfalls I know of.

It helps with travel time if you're driving a high-powered vehicle, and is accustomed to passing on 2-lane road.
