Delta Vancouver suites or Fairmont waterfront
 

We are attending a 5 day conference in Van this June. I am funded to stay at the Delta Vancouver Suites. I have heard the Fairmont Waterfront is very nice and closer to the conference center. Is it worth paying the extra ($50/night)out of my own pocket to stay there? My spouse will be accompanying me to do the tourist thing

No, I don't think it's worth it. You're talking extremely minimal distances. The Fairmont Waterfront is across the street from the conference centre, but the Delta Vancouver Suites is just a block around the corner from the Fairmont Waterfront. Not enough to warrant paying an extra $50 a night. Plus, the Delta Vancouver Suites is a nice hotel as well.

It would depend on if you had a water view room at the Fairmont - otherwise you'd be looking at the hotel across the street. On the other hand the water view would give you a view across to North Vancouver and the mountains, the float plane landing area, possibly the port of vancouver docks...
I doubt the view from the Delta would be great, although you might get a bit of ocean from one of the very top floors (it's only a few blocks away, but away from the water as well).
I don't know that I would pay the extra just for the view - I tend not to spent *too* much time in my hotel room when travelling...

I have stayed at the Waterfront 3 times now and I would def pay the extra $50 per night.

There is always lots of action at the convention centre and some days we would just grab a coffee or drink and go over to the centre and people watch.

It is a fabulous hotel.

Fairmont and Delta are run by the same company but they are just different classes or hotels.

I was just outside the Waterfront today. The actual waterfront outside is a massive construction site - huge steel frames for the new addition of the convention centre are there. To the right of it is the construction site of the new Fairmont estates they're building. I'm just saying this because it's not going to be an unobstructed view of the water.

I was interested in the comment from Carmanah about construction in and around the Fairmont Waterfront hotel. Thinking of staying there for 4 days in Sept (very much liked the hotel from previous stay) but would not want to pay those prices around a construction project. Any comments would be appreciated.

Get what's called a portside room if you want waterview but don't want to look out over the construction. I stayed there in Feb and looked out over the harbor to the other side of the Pan Pacific that is not undergoing construction (the Waterfront is basically a triangular shaped building). You don't get the mountains and Stanley Park but I still thought it was quite nice. And noise from the construction was not an issue in my room.
