Yitzes on Eglinton
Colemans on Bathurst
Centre Street Deli I think on Bathurst in Thornhill
Shopsy's on Yonge Street

Plus more Shopsy branches around the city, including on King Street West, between Duncan and John.

The Peel Pub, next door to the Shopsy's on King, could be considered a deli -- good smoked meat, bagels, etc.

Montreal Corn Beef restaurant on Adelaide Street West, at Wittmer.

Reuben Schwartz Steakhouse and Smokehouse, on King Street West, opposite, more or less, the Holiday Inn on King. This is a new place, open within the past few months.

thiese, and those listed in Gayl;e's note, are all Jewish-style deli's, in the sense of being proimarily eat-in and take out restaurants serving fully prepared food.

In Toronto, "Deli" also refers to grocery stores that specialize is certain types of prepared, packaged, and smoked food.

Some are combination bakeries and delis. San Remo, on Royal York Road, is an example, as is Commisso Brothers and Racco in the Caledonia Road area.

The Cheese Boutique on Ripley is a deli; serves food, sells prepared food to take home and eat immediately, and sells a wide variety of smoked and other processed meats, condiments, etc. There are several other deli's of this type on Bloor Street West, between Runnymede and Jane Streets.

There are also lots of very good deli's (in the smoked meat sandwich version of the meaning) in shopping center food courts all over the city. The biggest chain of fast food deli's is Druxy's, with many shopping center food court branches.

BAK

Isn't there a Snowdon Del in Toronto? I don't know where it is or if it has the same name.

Brian Kilgore Mar 13th, 2002 09:27 PM

Never heard of the Snowdon Deli in Toronto.

I used to live on Snowdon Avenue in Toronto, which is deli-free.

And the first Jaguar E-type I ever saw was at a dealer in Snowdon (the Montreal Snowdon)just down the street from the Chalet chicken restaurant.

BAK

Thanks.
Brian: you are the Toronto expert.Should I write an article «on» Augusta St. and Kesington Market? First english, then jewish, after II World War portuguese and today chinese. How real/important is this area for the people of Toronto ?
Thanks again.

Brian Kilgore Mar 14th, 2002 04:07 AM

It depends on who your readers are, what the publication is, etc.

That said, for armchair travellers, that's an interesting area to write about.

for live travellers who are young --teens, twenties -- or particularly adventurous, it's a good area. For older, richer, tourists, I do a different story.

BAK

Thanks, again, Brian.
The Augusta/Kesington Market article will be published ( well, maybe) in «airline magazin»...( 200.000 thousand readers every month, classes B and C, 35-45-65 years, europeans from Spain and Portugal and first generation canadians from Ontario).
Well, I'll be going to Toronto next week, so I'll see what's going on.
Thanks.

First of all, fodorites: Centre Street Deli in Thornhill on Centre Street, of course, was opened by the daughter of the owner of Snowdon Deli. Same meat, dishes, etc. as Snowdon in Montreal.
Second, we now have Dunn's Deli (also from Montreal) which opened in Empress Walk across from the North York City Centre (I think that's what it's called) on Yonge and Empress. Amazing smoked meat and deli! Then I would go to Pancer's at Bathurst and York Downs, south of Sheppard. For convenience you could also go to the Pickle Barrel. Hope this clarifies the deli question.

Montreal's much better.

Smoked Meat at the Main or at Schwartz's
