Day trips from Quebec City
Does anyone have any suggestions for day trips from Quebec City? We'll be based there for three nights (mid-September) and were thinking of leaving the city for a day to maybe go whale watching? Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Hi,

You can go hillwalking around Mont St.Anne, visit the indian village (village Huron), or visit Grosse Ile, where all the immigrants, especially Irish, were quarantined in the 19th century. It is now a museum. I think it is about 30km downstream from Quebec city.

Here are a few ideas, unfortunately I don't know how you can access them without a car. Montmorency Falls - Very impressive waterfall right outside the city. Seven Falls(chutes) park - A very scenic natural area north of the city. Ile de Oleans - An unspoiled piece of old French Canadian rural life about 1/2 hour from the city, great for meandering around on bicycle or auto. The Quebec zoo is also a short ride from downtown, and is quite nice. I was to the Huron reservation about 12 years ago, and wasn't very impressed(felt like a gift shop in a suburban area) - maybe it's improved since then?

Kathy,

Quebec has wonderful bicycle trails that are just for bikes. We rode from the harbor area to Monmorecy Falls - it was about 6 miles oneway. You can rent bikes at a shop on the Harbor next to the Farmers Market. It's a great way to see the falls. The trail is not very scenic but it's well laid out, flat, and well signed.
Quebec City is delightful - you might not want to leave.....
Sandra

We stayed in a B&B just recently in Quebec City. Incidentally, the French people are all extremely friendly and hospitable. Almost everyone speaks English.....perfectly!!
Have you thought about a bus trip to the Charlevoix area (whale watching cruise, and very scenic country), I believe the bus makes stops along the way at various places: St. Anne de Beaupre (a very beautiful church/cathedral), many interesting stops along the way of the St. Lawrence. There is an island just a few miles from Quebec City, which is very interesting to drive around. There are some excellent restaurants and beautiful homes sit high on the hills. A VERY interesting place!
