Day in Vancouver, no kids! Ideas??

My husband and i are going to Vancouver for an event the second week of October. The event is only on Saturday and we arrive on Thursday which leaves Friday as a free day. We considered doing Whistler, but I sense that october maybe isn't the most optimal time to check it out. So, next question, what to do in vancouver? We've both been several times and have done the usual (Stanley park, Grenville Island etc). We are escaping our kids for the weekend so want to do something unique and fun!
Any ideas? Not into shopping, love to have good meals and probably would enjoy a really cool lounge for the evening.

Does 'done the usual' include Grouse Mountain?

Don't go to Whistler for only one day, especially in October.

My favorite restaurant in Vancouver (and in the world) is Cardero's. Fantastic location, excellent menu, wonderful service. Doesn't get any more "Vancouver" than this place. Enjoy.

I would vote for Whistler, but only if there is decent weather. You need to have a plan B

Looks like the OP posted this in September 2013, and has likely already visited Vancouver. I wonder where they ended up visiting?
