Cutting a day in Newfoundland
We made the decision to include Gros Morne in our 2 week trip to Newfoundland in early July, and have the following itinerary. However, we need to cut one day.
Our first thought is to cut a day from Rocky Harbour, but I wonder if that's a more unique place, and that perhaps it'd be better to cut a day somewhere else. I guess what I'm asking is if some of our other stops are similar in scenery, and Gros Morne is different. Definitely want to do Western Brook while there, plus some other hikes. We like to hike and see beautiful scenery. Nights 1,2,3 St John's (arriving about midnight Night 1) Nights 3, 4, 5 Twillingate Nights 6, 7, 8, 9 Rocky Harbour Nights 10, 11, 12 Port Union Nights 13, 14 Witless Bay Night 15 St John's to return car and early morning flight home Am interested in hearing your thoughts. |
Clousie, you have 3 listed twice. Is that right?
I would cut a night out of Twillingate, but can't really tell you why. I suppose it's because we only spent one night there and we were ok with that. We were anxious to get to Gros Morne. |
You're right, Kodi, about messing up the nights. After St John's everything needs to be moved up a night, but the number of nights in each place is correct.
I was wondering about cutting a night in Twillingate, too. |
Twillingate is probably a good choice to cut a day. If you are hoping to see "icebergs", it will depend on the fog. We only had one day there a few years ago, and really didn't get to see the place for the dense air! I have never seen fog like that. We ate at a small hotel/restaurant combo that had a bar downstairs. Great seafood!
In Rocky Harbour we stayed at a place called Hilltop B&B. They have a separate building from their main house that has about six rooms plus the breakfast/dining area. It was a lovely spot and I seem to recall served great strawberry pancakes for breakfast. If you want a great place to eat in Deer Lake before you head to Gros Morne, try the Irving Big Stop. Nothing fancy, but they always have traditional Newfoundland items on their menu. |
Yanya, I'm so sorry you had such fog in Twillingate. We had a beautiful sunny day and saw lots of iceburgs.
SO don't give up hope Cloousie. |
I'd probably cut the day from Twillingate too unless you're going to take a day trip to places such as Fogo or Change Islands ... both very scenic. Rocky Harbour is a good and popular base for the park. While you're there you may want to visit Woody Point ... it's also a very pretty community.
