Customs Question
 

We are stuck in Plattsburgh because Amtrak derailed somewhere...we are on our way to Montreal.
Will customs let us bring our snack foods through? We have cheese and crackers, candy, powerbars.
I don't want to throw them out as don't know if we will make it to Montreal for dinner at any reasonable hour.

I don't think you will have a problem. I cross the border all the time to grocery shop and never have trouble bringing groceries back home to Canada. BUT we have been stopped taking fresh meat and fruits across.
Your snacks should be fine.
Even dairy products are fine. I buy yoghurt all the time.

Hope you are out of there soon.

So- do I need to declare them on the form?
But at this rate-will have dinner long before they get a bus to us. Wouldn't you know the one place in NY without a Starbucks- or even a vending machine!

I hope we get out of here soon also- lots and lots of bored people looking over my shoulder at Fodors entries!

I'm not an expert on teh subject, but , no I wouldn't think you'd have to declare them on a form. I'd just answer verbally IF they ask. and even then, just say you have snacks. It's the old rule, don't give more information than they ask for... but don't conceal either.

When I cross with my groceries, I just say "groceries" and rarely do they ask me what I have.

Are you Canadians coming home or Americans coming for vacation?

As kodi mentioned, you should have no problem at all with snacks. These are for your own use and not gifts for someone. I don't see the need to list them on any customs form.

Oh thanks so much. We are from Cold Spring, NY-way down the Hudson- never been to Montreal. Very excited about it...was hoping for a nice dinner tonight but "Cheddar Bunnies" may be it. My wireless dies at the border, but by then I will be too excited to read entries and will be watching the scenery.
Actually- it was a great trip up. Saw THREE golden eagles, two mature bald eagles and five immature bald eagles. And a kingfisher that flew along the train for over five minutes until it outpaced us. Never knew Amtrak was so good for birdwatching.

Finally- buses to the rescue.
I was stuck all night on a commuter train when the power went off all over the east coast couple years ago. Ever since then, never without snack food, water, at least one book, and a good attitude.

Ahh, I remember the black out well. Thank goodness I wasn't stranded anywhere.
I even remember the blackout of 1965 !!!

But, still, I always have snacks too.
