As a Canadian resident, I found out late in March of this year that the Canadian penny would be discontinued, which happened on May 4, and I thought I would mention it before the next edition of the Canada guidebook is printed, if you haven't yet been informed of such a change.

The penny will be discontinued so prices will be rounded up to the next nickel. However, if you pay with plastic, you'll still pay to the penny.

The one cent coin remains and will continue to remain legal currency. Over 30 billion of them have been minted over the past 40 years, nearly 1000 for every person in Canada. They will not soon disappear.

I believe prices will be rounded either up or down, to the nearest nickel. And while the pennies may remain legal tender merchants will no longer be required to use them and you may have to take the contents of your piggy bank to the bank. Not sure when this will come into effect, however. This is long overdue, in my mind. The Australians haven't used a penny in years, and it works just fine. Now if they would just get rid of that enormous 50 cent piece....
