couple trip 6 hour drive from newmarket
 

My husband and i (in our 40s) need to have a last minute suggestion for mini vacation. We dont want to drive more than 6 hours. We were waiting for our teens to see if they were available, but it looks like its just the two of us. We recently drove alot ,so dont want to be car bound too long. any ideas?

Have you considered Prince Edward County around Picton? We like it for a 'couples getaway', The Devonshire Inn is a nice place to stay.

The Prince Edward county suggestion is a good one. Or Ottawa, if you have not been there for a while and want more urban-ness.

Or if it has been a shile since you've been to Niagara Falls, go there, take the Maid fo the Mist boat, and stay in Niagara on the Lake or NF for a couple of nights.

Try Windsor as your destination.

I'd take the back way like Highway 7 to Stratford to catch a play or stay overnight in London.

Continue onwards to Lake St. Clair and Windsor. Stay at the Hilton or Radision with a river view. On Erie street, there a number of excellent Italian restaurants.

Cross over to Detroit and drive to Royal Oak. The downtown area is being revitalized for the Superbowl.

On the return trip, follow the north shore of Lake Erie and visit Pelee Island.

Continue following Lake Erie until you hit Niagara Falls and Niagara on the Lake. Return to Hamilton by the Wine Route. Explore the Halton Hills to Highway 9 and return to Newmarket.

If you don't want to do much driving, I'd select a spot and just relax....probably one of the resorts in Muskoka if your time frame is in the next few weeks.

Even if you've been before or have done the cottage thing, it's great to get away without kids to a resort. We like Grandview outside Huntsville but there are many to choose from.

Otherwise I'd suggest Niagara on the Lake as well since you can enjoy theatre, wonderful restaurants, shop, visit wineries and relax all very closeby. There are a number of lovely properties in the area, either in town or in Jordan, nearby...from B &B's to upscale hotels. It's very busy there for the next month so that might determine your decision as well.

My husband and I just got back from a 4 day getaway. Left Markham on the Sunday, drove to Flesherton for lunch at Munshaw's bistro - wonderful patates frites and some great seafood. Then drove up to Owen Sound and stayed at the Highland Manor B & B for two nights. We loved this place. It is an 1872 mansion with 5 guest rooms, all with ensuite. The owners, who are terrific, live on the 3rd floor and the main floor rooms are all available to guests, so you feel like you are in an inn. They have a website http://www.highlandmanor.ca/ and it really is just like the photos. The breakfasts are wonderful (the cheese egg bake is amazing). Owen Sound was a great place to stay: we drove to Harrison Park (right in town) then hikes to Inglis Falls which is partly on the Bruce Trail. There are some good restaurants in the town (Jazzmyn's Tapas and the hidden gem, Ted's Road Range Diner)and the harbour walk is really pretty. From Owen Sound we drove to Nottawa, stopping in Meaford (really pretty harbour) and the village at Blue Mountain (a little Disneyish but cute). We stayed in the Pretty River Valley B & B in the Pretty River Valley of course. The owners have Icelandic horses and reindeer and Percherons (sp?). The location is quite isolated and beautiful and peaceful. From there, we hiked around the Duncan crevices, also on the Bruce Trail. Ate a the Siamese Gekko (terrific Thai) in Collingwood one night. Drove home on the Thursday, stopping off at Wasaga (it may be tacky but it is a beautiful beach)and eating lunch in Elmvale. All our stops were 30 - 45 minutes apart, so while it sounds like a lot of driving, it was very relaxing. We really enjoyed ourselves and managed to eat very well throughout the trip. This was our first getaway without our kids and it really worked well for us.
