Chip Credit card or will swipe work?
DH is heading to Canada next week for a month long motorcycle trip. He has a swipe VISA credit card that he would prefer to use but also has a chip and pin card that he could use.
Will he be able to get gas and other essentials with the swipe card? Thanks |
Yes he will be OK. Not all cards have been converted to chip and all of the terminals you can still swipe the card. As a matter of fact a lot of terminals haven't been replaced so don't even take a chip.

Thanks~

Huh? Almost everywhere I go use chip cards. I've only had to swipe a card maybe once in the last year.

Susan - One of my Amex cards hasn't been replaced with a Chip yet - all the terminals I have used have the ability to accept cards that don't have chips. As a matter of fact the only establishment I have been in the US (just spent three weeks there) was Walmart. They haven't switched to chips yet in the US so if we want American business we need to be able to accommodate them.

I'm not saying that we can't accommodate them. I'm just saying that almost everywhere I go has the chip. All 4 of my credit cards are chip.

DebitNM, we travel on vacation to Canada fairly often. Being from the U.S., none of our cards have the chip. Have not run into a problem with them anywhere.

Thanks again to all. He's on his way and is chipless, but not clueless! LOL!

Had no trouble using swipe card for the week I was in Newfoundland last week. Almost all the terminals were equipped for chip but accepted swipes too.
|
Thanks for the update. Hope the trip was grand.

It was!

Oh, I just saw this thread. I was going to suggest taking a chip card but keeping it safe in a shoulder bag. Canadians just live visiting Americans with a chip on their shoulder.
