Chateau Granville

We are making our first trip to Vancouver in a few weeks and have reservations at the Chateau Granville. Can anyone tell us anything about this hotel? I'm hoping it's in a good, safe location, and close to some moderately-priced restaurants. We will be arriving from Victoria by ferry, so is a cab the best way to get from the docks to the hotel? Thanks.....

The hotel is just okay but the area is a bit seedy with quite a bit of sex trade activity. It's quite safe and close to Granville Island and Yaletown with their good restaurants and attractions but if you're looking for a classy area this isn't it.

Take the Pacific Coach Line bus from downtown Victoria to Downtown Vancouver. It's much, much cheaper than a cab or even renting a car and from the bus depot in vancouver you can get a cab to your hotel.

My wife and I too are travelling and staying at the "Chateau" in late June, early July and I have heard it has totally been re-done and is very nice. I know someone who was just there. True, the area is a little iffy at night but nothing unusual for a big city.

First I will apologize for coming across as mean spirited, but I am always amazed at posts such as this. I have a reservation at this or that hotel. Can someone tell me anything about the hote? Why not do a little research first and then ask questions before booking?

The hotel itself is very nice. The area is fine too. It is right near a few sex shops but it is also close to Robson Street, Yaletown and Granville Is. I've walked that area late at night and have always felt safe. There is also a mens homeless shelter a block away so sadly you will see a few street people. Personally, I think the Cheateu Granville is fine but if you can cancel without penalty you might also look into some westend properties. On Robson or Davie between about Thurlow and Denman. The Parkhill on Davie comes to mind...but I know there are others too. The Parkhill is right close to English Bay and you can take the water taxi to Granville Is. Also Stanley park is nearby as are many great resturants (try the macoroni grill on davie or the rain city grill on Denman...the milestones on Denman has a great patio with views of E.B.) along with shopping and dining on Robson.

Thanks very much to Gary, John, & Stephie....the information was most helpful, and, based on what I learned from you, I feel that we will be ok at the C.G. for just a 2-night stay. As for Phil.....I have learned the hard way that "doing research" does not by any means equate with getting accurate information. I much prefer to hear from people who have actually been to the place in question and have firsthand details that NO research will provide. If you have nothing better to do than respond to serious inquiries with a flippant reply, then you have entirely too much free time. Pity....

Actually, Phil makes a good point. However, it does make sense, if one is able to book a hotel that can be cancelled within a specified period of time without penalty, to go ahead and grab an attractive rate and then ask questions.
