I have called a few car rental agencies to pick up a car in Calgary (Alberta) and drop it off 11 days later in Vancouver (BC). I am getting prices of $1600 to $2700, which is considerably more than I've paid for a rental of equal length in Europe. I was told that this was because pick up and drop off were in different counties.

Does anyone know a way around this, or a car rental company with reasonable rates?

Well, you're picking up and dropping off in the same country, but different cities. Because car rental places are individually owned, it costs them to have their car brought back to the "home" location. The farther from home, the more it costs.

We have arranged a car rental. We are picking up in Calgary and dropping off in Vancouver for 3 days at a cost of UK£145.00. Its with Avis (http://www.avis.co.uk/)We booked in February for our holiday in June so I presume as we booked well in advance we got a good deal. Nevertheless, I would still try Avis and see what they can offer you. Good luck

i am picking up a car at the vancouver airport and returning to calgary a week later and paying closer to 800...are you doing airport locations or city locations. sometimes city locations can be a lot more .... that hapened to me in vancouver
