Cape Breton Trip Advice Needed

Two couples traveling to NS this summer in July. Plans are to fly into Halifax and stay one night at Courtyard Halifax. Next day drive to Cape Breton. This is where the fun starts. We plan to spend 6 nights on the Cape. So far have decided on Ingonish (Lantern Hill & Hollow or Seascape Coastal Retreat) suggestions on which of these is better? For at least 2 nights. Trying to decide which other towns to stay in overnight and what order to do this in. Sydney & Baddeck look promising, but also think the West coast area should be covered. Is there a place to stay in the Inverness area that anyone can recommend? Also order of where to drive to is appreciated. We will do day trips from where we stay, but would love to stay where there is good dining and a pub or two with Celtic music would be great.

Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks.

this would be my recommendation: drive from halifax and drive to pictou and then antigonish area enjoying both places during the day. spend the night around the mabou area - consider this place - http://www.macleods.com/ - i camped around cheticamp and was NOT at all impressed with the town. it's the only place i found unwelcoming to tourists in nova scotia. but some people recommend staying in cheticamp. then, the next day, drive the cabot trail. check out a few places along the way and take note of others that you want to return to. then spend the next 2-3 nights in ingonish area. you can spend at least one day, redoing the trail in the opposite direction and seeing the places you didn't the day before (skyline trail is a nice easy hike that takes about 2 hours). then spend the remaining 2 nights or so in baddeck. from baddeck, i left early in the morning and went to fortress louisberg for about 5 hours. then drove to port hawksbury and crashed there for the night. from there, an easy drive to halifax.
fabulous area and 6 nights is perfect.

We stayed in Baddeck (Lynwood Inn, which was very nice) for 3 nights in July this year. It is a very pleasant small town, lots of restaurants - very full of tourists though! However one nice touch is that they have not allowed any chains (Tim Hortons, McDonalds etc) into the town itself - so it isnt too commercialized. It was a good base to go around the Cabot Trail - which can be driven in a day if you don't stop to hike. If you want to hike, you may want to find a place to stay somewhere around Pleasant Bay (assuming going around the trail counterclockwise from Baddeck).

A possibility for another location that might be fun - the Glenora distillery has an inn and seemed a really nice location (we did the tour) - could be a good place to stay as an alternative to Mabou.

regarding the cabot trail, we stayed at the An Seanne Mhanse Bed and Breakfast in baddeck for 2 nights. It was great! very close to the hotel that has live music in their pub and the restaurant with the lobster meal. you have to go to the pizza place for one night - amazing! def stay in baddeck.

it is possible to do the cabot trail, stop for 2 short hikes, 1 beach and a few moose sightings in one day. you have to set off at a decent time. I was 6.5 months preggers so I wasn't walking very fast either.

we also went in july - have a great time! don't be discouraged if it's raining - it's beautiful!

We stayed at the Celtic Lodge in
Ingonish and it was lovely. Also,
there was a great golf course nearby. Went swimming at the most
beautiful beach called Black Brook,
the water was about 65 and clear,
huge waves. The best food we had
was at the hotel and in Cheticamp.
There are also some wonderful fishing lodges with great gourmet
type food. Halifax is great!!
Have a tour of the brewery.
