Our tv blew and we are going to bite the bullet and buy a larger flat screen tv. I was thinking the electronic competition might be very fierce in U.S. and maybe should look at shopping at one of their stores - Circuit City etc. Does anyone know what we'd have to pay on top of the dollar conversion if we brought it over the border on a one-day visit to Port Huron? Does our idea make any sense?

I can tell you honestly that if you are there for less than 24 hours and if the TV is more than 50$ CAD, which it probably is, you will have to pay a 200% duty on it (if you will declare it at the border). This happened to a friend of mine who bought a CD player a while ago. If you sleep over for one night, you may be able to get away with it depending on how many people you are travelling with and what the cost of the TV is. Check out Canada Custom's website. Another thing to consider is the warranty, most are not valid here in Canada for products purchased in the states. Same thing the other way, so not always a good deal any more to buy US electronics. And personally, I have found, after dollar conversion, the cost is much better, if at all. Good luck in whatever you choose.

I don't know where you live in the US, but in California, electronics are alot cheaper here than in Canada, even with the exchange rate. You will have to pay duty on it for sure, so not worth it at all.

Sorry, misread your post...thought you were living in the US and wanted to buy electronics in Canada.<BR><BR>Well, it's the same answer though, I wouldn't do it because of duty...Unfortunately, even though US prices are better, it ends up costing you more because of this.

The duty exemptions are:<BR>Less than 24 hrs - zip!<BR>48 hrs - $200<BR>7 days - $500<BR>For a larger flat-screen TV, this could be irrelevant.<BR><BR>I would call the Customs people and ask. There is not a lot of duty on electronics, I think. They will collect GST too, and possibly PST. (They do in some circumstances.) And some of those more progressive states also collect a sales tax, which they may not refund. <BR><BR>OTOH, Ontario will refund PST for out-of-province shoppers; so maybe Quebec will too - see if there's a bargoon in Hull or Montreal if they will refund.<BR><BR>Look into Costco in your area. I saw a 41&quot; Plasma TV in Winnipeg Costco for $5999 Can.
