Canadian Toll roads
 

We are leaving Arizona next week for a trip out east. Will be visiting family in Canada and would like some information about toll roads. Last time we were in Canada we received a notification from the car rental company that we owed X amount of $ for tolls and don't want that to happen again. We will be driving from Vermont to Montreal, to Rideau Ferry (near Ottawa), to Port Perry, to Cambridge, to Detroit. Is there some sort of sticker we need for the car?
Would appreciate any help you can give us.

The only times you will likely hit a toll road are between Port Perry and Cambridge and then between Cambridge and Detroit. If you use mapquest, you can request directions avoiding toll roads - the time difference doesn't appear to be much between the toll and non-toll routes.

Thanks for your reply. I'm not so concerned about paying the tolls, just don't know how. Does Canada use vignettes, for example, like Switzerland does?

There is only one toll road in Ontario and it is Hwy.407 which circumvents Toronto. It is about 45 km in length and costs about C$18 for a one way trip. It can be avoided by using Hwy. 401 all the way. Depending on the time of day, it is definitely advantageous to use #407 as congestion in and around Toronto during rush hour can be horrendous. Most of the bridges to the States are toll bridges, however. The 407 has cameras that read your number plate. On the bridges, you have to pay a person.

If you don't mind paying the tolls, this seems to be a convenience instead of a bad thing. Or did the rental place add hefty administrative fees, threaten you with legal action, or was just plain nasty about the whole business?

QueScaisJe, now that I know the amount for tolls on the 407, I do not believe the car rental company added on any fees. In that case you are certainly correct that it is a convenience. Thank you all for your help.
