Canadian Thanksgiving questions
 

What date will the Canadian Thanksgiving be on this year? Just wondering because my hubby and I will be in NS from Oct. 3 thru Oct. 15.

Will shops and tourist destinations be closed that day?

I hope you don't think I'm a total idiot for asking these questions.

Thanksgiving is Monday Oct 13 this year and most places are usually closed. Grocery stores, malls, banks etc. I'm really not sure about the touristy things, but perhaps they stay open for the tourists. However, since the real high 'season' is over, you may find things very quiet.
HOw about a turkey dinner at a restaurant!

Hell0 Kodi, where are your from? I live in Calgary and I can't think of anywhere that will be closed on Thanksgiving day. The closest is that transit will be running on Sunday schedule. And by the way gopack - thank you for recognizing that Canadian thanksgiving is in October - we do not think that you are a total idiot at all!

Thanks for your replies. It turns out, we will be at the Keltic Lodge on Thanksgiving Day. So it probably won't make too much difference for us since we'll be taking some hikes and relaxing there. (Figured that out after I posted.)

The reason for my "idiot" remark is that I have posted my impressions of a trip to a Carribean island recently in the associated message board on Fodors and got totally flamed by some of the posters there. It was crazy how defensive the people were and how they would bring politics into many of their remarks. It really makes me watch out how I phrase things.

I live in Ontario and things are deader than a doornail on holidays.
Even when I was in BC on MAY 24th, the town of Revelstoke was completed closed up and deserted.
So sounds like Calgary is the place to be on holidays!!! HOpe to be there next year.

Nova Scotia does not have Sunday or Holiday Shopping at all. Shops at touristy spots may be open but nothing else. And for the time being neither does New Brunswick. We have Sunday shopping from Aug till Dec. Moncton and a few small communities does have holiday and sunday shopping all year.

I think things should be closed on Holidays, after all the employees have families that they want to spend time with too.

LissaJ I agree completely that more businesses should close on holidays. Unfortunately its just not that way out here. The closest we come to closing down is Christmas - and even then you can find a 7-11 open.

Kodi, hope you enjoy Calgary we like to think that we are a fun town to visit! And don't forget to get some good Alberta Beef!

I was in BC this spring, and am headed for Newfoundland at the end of August, but now you've got me really looking forward to Alberta next year. Any good recommendations for steak houses that serve good Alberta beef. Mmmm I can't wait.

gopack I noticed you sent your itinerary to another Fodorite and that you mentioned staying at Boscowen Inn...just feel compelled to give you my view on that place. When my two friends and I arrived they messed up our reservation and had to do a bunch of shuffling to accomodate us. The food was mediocre. And...when we left the enxt morning the proprietor came out to our car "just to mention" that the tip for the chambermaid is not inlcuded in the tip for the food (we had already left money behind in our room). Now this may be a bad on-off experience, but as a gal from Nova Scotia, I know I can get better service elsewhere!
