Canada's East Coast - NS, PEI

My husband and I are planning a trip with our 2 1/2 year old son. We are thinking July. We will be travelling from Ontario and will be flying. We will have approx 10 days (8 if you don't count the days for arrival and departure). We would like to explore Halifax, Cape Breton and PEI. Suggestions are welcome...we are thinking of flying into Halifax and renting a car. How many days should we spend in each location, where to stay, what to see? Any and all suggestions are welcome. Please keep in mind, we will not be able to do any serious hiking as we have a toddler with us. We are looking for sight seeing opportunities, beautiful drives, beaches, parks etc. Thanks!

My first thought... has to do with the mind of a 2 1/2-year-old... <b>I WONDER</b> if his eventual <I>earliest (vague) memories</i> could evolve to include (Hopewell Cape at low tide).

Beyond that, I think we in the Fodors forums wish that you had a bit more sense of <i>what you want</i> that we might be able to <I>improve</i> for you, rather than us dictating the whole thing.

I mean, I see that you want to explore the main attractions, but if you looked around a bit, and gained a better sense for your own, <b>specific</b> priorities, then you could return here and ask how best to optimize those.

Maybe click on my name and read back through my posts related to the Maritimes, and draw individual details from those, and piece together a few <I>must-sees</i>.

Once you finalize your window of travel, maybe print the tide times for the WHOLE window in which you'll be near to the Bay of Fundy, for quick and easy reference while driving around.

Maybe print for 3 or 4 spots in the area... <b>Hopewell Cape</b> (for sure) and perhaps Truro, and one other... (Burntcoat Head?)

Thank you for your suggestions, I am going to do some research tomorrow and look at your posts as suggested. Once I have some more idea what we would like to see/do specifically I may return here for some advice. Thanks again for your relpy!

It is a long drive from Halifax to Cape Breton with a toddler..plan on over five hours. Having taken a toddler to N.S. he loved playing on a beach. There are many beaches within an hour's drive of Halifax that he would enjoy.

Oh, and it should be said that road distance in NS doesn't seem to go as fast as distance <I>anticipated</i> in the more populated areas in North America <b>(that are actually <I>on the way to somewhere!</i>)</b>.

(it's a good idea <b>NOT</b> to plan on covering 70 miles in an hour, etc.)

(it isn't like, say, <I>truckers</i> having a <b>choice</b> to travel through {and bring their business to} North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, or Kansas to get somewhere else)

Thanks NorthwestMale, I posted another thread today about the plans I have researched regarding NS, perhaps if you have time, you could click on my name and share your thoughts on my 3 day plan (I haven't researched the rest yet).
