Canada is better...

After having spent considerable time touring through the Western U.S., I am convinced that there is no reason to waste any of your time or money there. The reason: Canada offers everything the Western U.S. has to offer, plus its cheaper, and the people are far more friendly and accomodating. Why go to Aspen when you can go to Whistler/Blackholm? Why visit Oregon, when you can visit the B.C. coast? The Okanagan Valley has just as many great wineries as does California. The National Parks in Canada, such as Banff and Jasper are world renowned. Calgary in Alberta is the Denver of the North, and Vancouver British Columbia is the Los Angeles of the North, without all of the pollution or obnoxious people. So, if you're planning a trip from the U.K. to North America, skip the U.S. for a more pleasant (and more affordable trip). Happy travels!

Well, thank you.

But on the other hand, our beaches are not as warm, and we have no giant hole as big and dramatic as the Grand Canyon, which I've never visited but want to see someday.

The American Falls at Niagara Falls are beautiful, but, come to think of it, you get a better view from Canada.

Canada's Wonderland matches much of Disney World, but it's only open in the summer. And there's nothing to compare with the other parts of Disney World like Epcot. And we have no attraction like Universal Studios.

I'll match Canadian food against American any time, except, even with the exchange rate, it seems to cost more for an informal, casual lobster dinner up here than it does in Maine.

And, speaking of the exchange rate, it does make Canada a relative bargain compared to the USA, except for a few things like gasoline.

And NY is NY, and there's nowhere like it in the world.

Thanks for the comments.
BAK

Cheers English Bloke,
Thanks for the compliments to our country. As far as US/Canada comparisons, might a better one be Vancouver to San Francisco not L.A.?
Just a thought.
A.M.

Thanks englishbloke..I also am very grateful to be a Canadian resident. But you sure have stirred up the U.S. board with your comments!

A.M. Jan 16th, 2002 01:07 PM

Duh, duh,
Who cares what his nationality is, he has opinions. It would be impolite not to thank him for his compliments. I doubt he is Canadian, though, it is not like us to be so forward.
A.M.

Go to the USA board. He posted the same message, and then in the same exact writing style he claimed to be an Australian tourist with the same ideas.

Whatever the bloke is - english or not, one thing I'd agree with if he'd mentioned: face it guys, Canada is much safer. Everything else may be arguable, but not the gun laws.

Why would anyone feel it was necessary to denigrate one country in order to praise another? Canada and the United States are both beautiful countries that are well worth visiting.

traveller Jan 16th, 2002 04:03 PM

I agree John K. Both countries have their pluses and minuses.

I have just recently discovered this board after trying several times for help and suggestions on the Lonely Planets boards. I got tired of all the 'not so nice' comments that really had nothing to do with traveling and WANTING to meet new people and to see different sights. This board seems to focus on really caring about helping others with information. I agree with John K and wonder why anyone would post such a thing, other than to ruffle feathers. Thank you to the people who have made suggestions to my families summer trip, we can't wait to see Canada and meet some new people!

This topic almost verbatim was on the US board as well and within about 12 hours drew over 50 spirited responses but most - like John K. agreed that both places are pretty darn good and why get into a pissing contest. I was upset that Fodors saw fit to pull the topic off the US board the same day it was on for reasons best known to them
yet they didn't see fit to do the same here.

Frankly any post that raised Americans appreciation of Canada as an alternate to the Exited States is fine by me and after seeing some of the virtually porno and viscious crap that sits on that board for days I can only wonder what Fodor's police consider 'appropriate'.

I am considering moving to Canada. I have had quite enough of the U.S.A. I am reading here to learn more about it. I visited Montreal, and Toronto in the late 60's, and that was a long time ago.

This is an obvious troll (ie: someone who deliberately goes out of their way to make an inflamatory remark, hoping for a heated response)

Just ignore it...

louie Jan 24th, 2002 08:02 AM

I'd rather go to ITALY :GREAT FOOD ,DRINK ,BEACHES ,MOUNTAINS,& PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!

Joe Jan 25th, 2002 12:47 PM

Englishbloke might be a troll, but he makes some very pertinent remarks. The comparisons are right on except Vancouver IS more like San Francisco than LA. The locations are just different enough to warrant trips to Canada and the US. We enjoyed them all. When you have two Countries in such close proximity, it stands to reason that there might be simailarities in natural wonders. Would have to disagree (respectfully) on the wines though.
