Calgary/Banff in March, have questions.
I live in Winnipeg and we were originally planning on going to the above places in early April. Now we will be leaving around March.22 for one week. We plan on using my cousins car for our day trip to Banff and area. I did a search on some of the sites others recommend. If you have more suggestions on what to see and do in Calgary/Banff area, please let me know. Thanks for your help!

If you let us know what kinds of things you like to do, and which places you have already decided to visit, it will be easier to answer your question. The weather at the end of March - beginning of April is really unpredictable, and it could be a major factor in your plans. If I were you I would make a back-up plan (for indoor activities such as visiting the Whyte Museum in Banff) just in case the weather turns nasty (and at the end of March that usually means wet snow). |
Oops! I guess it would help to let you know what we are interested in. For Banff, so far we plan riding the gondola car up Sulphur Mountain, checking out some of the shops. We haven't decided what else we should do while in the Banff area. For Calgary, we were thinking of visiting Bragg Creek area, but not much else planned so far. Suggestions are welcome!

Canuck11, suggest you also go to the Royal Tyrrell Museum in Drumheller if you can. It's east of Calgary, and involves a full day trip, but the dinosaur skeletons are amazing.
As far as downtown Calgary is concerned, you could walk along the Stephen Avenue Mall and visit the western outfitting shops. Be sure to check out the Devonian Gardens on the fourth level of Toronto Dominion Square. If you're interested in the Glenbow Museum, it too is on the Stephen Avenue Mall. I'm sure your Calgary relatives will have their own suggestions of what you could do together but, if you're all looking for inspiration, take in an art house movie at the Plaza Theatre in Kensington and go to a nearby restaurant for dinner afterwards. There's a neat East Indian restaurant (I forget the name) just across the street from the Plaza Theatre. Alternatively, just a few blocks away (easy walking distance) is a great Italian restaurant called La Luna Rosa. Some of the main courses are quite expensive, and others are very reasonably priced. They're all good. If one chooses carefully, one can have a very reasonably priced meal. Osteria di Medici is an Italian restaurant that also is close to the Plaza Theatre in Kensington. The food is good, and it's fine to go there if money is no object. But it's jolly expensive, and I feel that the food at the much more reasonably priced La Luna Rosa is as good. Hope those suggestions help to keep you out of mischief. ;) |
Canuck11, forget to mention a really good, VERY reasonably priced restaurant if you're downtown at lunch time. It's a Thai place called the Rose Garden, opposite The Bay on Stephen Avenue Mall. My husband and I occasionally go there for dinner, not because it's so reasonably priced (although that doesn't hurt), but because we love the food.
