Natasha...the scenery is absolutely stunning no matter which way you go. We live here and take several drives a year over the trail both ways. There are so many lookoffs that you can pull over and park and view the scenery that you won't miss anything. And as you're driving along you may look behind you and wish you were going in the opposite direction but then you'll go over the next mountain or around the next turn and be thankful that you chose the direction you did. In my opinion, it really doesn't matter which direction you go.... you'll probably be so amazed with it all that you'll want to turn around at the end and go back again anyway!

People seem to prefer traveling clockwise, especially if they're squeamish about heights, but I totally agree with the above post - it's beautiful in either direction, and I personally don't feel that it makes a big difference on the "scary" meter.

A book (probably Scenic Byways in North American) the National Geographic Society recommended counterclockwise. My trip there last July was counterclockwise and I loved it. But I agree with other posts - it is beautiful in either direction. Betty
