Boston to Cabot Trail for foliage

Considering a trip from Boston to the Cabot Trail for foliage season - interested in hearing of any others who may have done something similar. Would appreciate advice on driving or taking ferry from Maine - also looking for recommendations for places to stay, eat and see on the Trail.

I cannot fathom why anybody who has tourism interests north of Halifax ever considers taking the ferry to NS from Maine.

The drive up and around is pleasant enough, with juuuuuust enough possible alternative paths to keep it interesting. And as NS isn't on the way to anywhere the roadways are typically comfortable traffic-wise.

I cannot offer any knowledge about fall foliage in the area but I have responded to many NS threads over the years here and you could click on my name for various tidbits from those threads.
