Bluenose

We will be in Lunenburg the last week in Sept. and are considering a sail on the Bluenose. Has anyone taken this trip that might have some information on what type of sailing conditions we might expect this time of year. We have not had a lot of experience with sailing, just ferries, etc. Think I probably need to make reservations, but wasn't sure whether it would be necessary that time of year.

The Bluenose II (replica) operates cruises out of the harbour until the end of the September. You make reservations there at http://museum.gov.ns.ca/bluenose/cruise-info.html.No matter what time of year, you have to make reservations.

The weather is usually mild in September and can be downright glorious (we were in T-shirts there doing gardening in mid-October last year.) But having said that please note that maritime conditions require you to keep an eye on things. If you have to change plans due to weather, rest assured, the Museum is wonderful, too.

Thanks for the info. Actually, we were in Lunenburg at the museum several years ago and enjoyed it very much. The Bluenose II was in Halifax at the time so didn't have the opportunity to sail. Guess I will go ahead and make reservations and hope for the best, weather wise.

Don't fret about the weather. If a calm day though the Bluenose may not be able to use her sails - which would be a shame.

Book for the afternoon sail. There is never wind in the morning, but it always picks up by lunch time. But even if you have to motor, just getting out on the water to see the town and surrounding area is spectacular. And bring a fleece or jacket for the sail. Even if it is warm on shore, I guarantee you it will be chilly on the water.
