between Halifax and Cape Breton?

I'm planning an August trip with a few nights in Halifax and a few nights in Cape Breton at the Markland. It seems like a long drive between the two spots; does anyone have ideas for a place to stay for a night in between the two? Preferably somewhere small and pretty, maybe with nearby hiking. Thanks for the help!

Well, Pictou is a lovely spot to stop. You are only 1.5 hours from Halifax. There are lots of hiking trails. Perhaps you might want to stay at the Stonehame Chalets www.stonehamechalets.com that have access to hiking trails. Couple of other suggestions: Consulate Inn (www.consulateinn.ca), Bonnie Brae B&B (www.bonniebrae.ca) Willow House Inn (www.willowhouseinn.com), Evening Sail (www.eveningsail.ca) are all places in Pictou (B&B's) or Pictou Lodge (www.pictoulodge.com) which is located on the outskirts of the town.

Harbourside Cottages, located in Little Harbour, are in close proximity to the Provincial beach, Melmerby.

Another suggestion may be Liscombe Lodge? (www.signatureresorts.com)

i'm not sure where markland is but you can do the drive between halifax and cape breton in one day if you wish.
but, if you wish to break it up, pictou is a lovely area or antigonish.
