Best way to get to Tofino??

We are traveling from Victoria to Tofino in summer 2008. What is the best way to get there? Air? Car?

I don't think there are any airlines that fly between Victoria and Tofino so unless you go to Vancouver from Victoria and fly from there, driving is your best option from Victoria. Plus it's nice to have a car while you're there.

Thanks. How are the roads? My husband and I drove through the Pyrenees mountains and has a tough time with the windy mountain roads.

I don't find the drive difficult (I've done it a number of times now) but I know some people do. All but about an hour of the five hour trip is relatively straight and easy. But there definitely is a part of the trip that has lots of curves and switchbacks.

Sorry to bear a dead horse here, but are there any treacherous, scary roads where you are staring down the side of mountains? We both have height issues. Thanks for all your insights on this.

I have height issues too ;-), and I was ok with the drive. There is a part of the road where you're descending out of the mountains to reach Tofino that has some drops offs but there is a guardrail and I never felt nervous. What has made me nervous on that part of the drive are the logging trucks that go way too fast for the road but I just take my time and pull over where I can to let them pass me if they are riding my bumper.

When I was doing the journey, there were few flights to or from Tofino due to a spate of crashes.

Because I wanted to enjoy the scenery, I decided to take the TofinoBus rather than drive myself. This is not Greyhound bus- there are no facilities on board and you are not allowed to eat, but with a 'pit stop' along the way, I didn't mind that.

While I don't recall any big drop-offs, the roads are very twisty-turny and populated by more than the occasional logging truck... thus, I left the driving to a professional!

Tofino Air may fly from Tofino to Victoria (by way of seaplane out of Tofino harbour).

Orca Air flies between Vancouver and Tofino (flew with them this past summer, flight was great).

I understand that the bus between Tofino and Victoria takes about 5 hours

We've driven there a few times (live in Victoria) and enjoy the drive!

Port Alberni is about the only town you pass, so pick up any road snacks/gas/etc. there. . . there is a beautiful rainforest grove that you can stop on about 1/2 way to Tofino, with walking paths and giant trees. Having a car also allows you to check out sister town Ucluelet.

We may fly in the future (it IS an option) but it's a nice drive at least once. Especially if you have good music or something you need to think about.
