Best Bank to use PLUS ATM
 

Looking to find out which Canadian Banks in BC have the lowest fee for using their ATM. I have a PLUS ATM card and an Interlink ATM Card. Thanks for your help!

Canada has only about half a dozen chartered banks, easily recognisable everywhere in the country. They are not independently owned so all their rates are similar. the fee averages 1.50 cdn for cash transactions. The same banks own most atms at all cash paying points. So far only McDonalds charges a fee per transactions. Amy merchant who charges a fee has to declare their fee while you make your transactions. AtM will automatically give you the best daily exchange rate. Stay away from independent atm machines . The short tiny ones in lobbys and convenience stores.
Some common bank names, Scotia,
BMO, Royal, CIBC, TDCanada Trust,
HongKong Bank of Canada, Credit Unions, Caisses Populaires. Merchants will have signs everywhere if they take Interac which will take your card. Canadians generally dont use the word ATM, mostly "Bank machines and Interac" Check with your bank before you leave but I am sure your card work everywhere.

Fees are a combiantion of the Canadian bank and your US bank, so there's no way to tell you the final numbers.

But the machines attached to the walls of real banks are generally lower than the independent machines inside bars, restaurants and stores.

The "real" banks (RBC is on most Royal Bank machines now; BMO which may also say Bank of Montreal, Scotiabank, CIBC and TD-Canada Trust) also hve freestanding machines with the same rates as their bank-attached machines.

I try to use Scotiabank because it is an affilitate of the Bank of America. That way, a cash withdrawal is not treated as an "off net" transaction. At least it was not last year.

I think any of the banks can handle PLUS.


Where you might have a problem is with the private ATM's. I remember the one at Lake Louise Village was Cirrus only.
I unfortunately was PLUS only.
So, no money.

The problem did NOT exist in Banff where there were branches of several banks.

Thanks for the info -- I know what fee my credit union charges. Sounds like I should stick to major Canadian banks when using my ATM cards.
