Banff vs. Switzerland

Has anyone been to both Banff Nat'l Park and different parts of Switzerland as well, and if so, how would you rate one over the other scenery wise? Thanks!

Hi Mike:

While both are beautiful (and many a debate has raged about which area is more beautiful) Switzerland's peaks are higher. I don't think you can rate over the other but Banff is definitely more majestic in terms of overall nature (i.e. forests, rivers, lakes, wildlife). Less populated. (not counting the tour buses).

What time of year? Both have beautiful mountains (ours don't tend to hide in the clouds as often. I think Switzerland has a more gentle beauty with lovely green hillsides with cows grazing up in the higher altitudes. Canada as rugged and the only things you see grazing our mountain goats, mountain sheep, deer, elk and bears. The color of our lakes in the Spring and Summer are an unbelieveable shade of turqoise. Mostly though we are about 1/3 of the cost of Switzerland so there's a good reason to come here.

I just got back from the Canadian Rockies and last year I was in Switzerland -- the Berner Oberland and Zermatt and Saas Fee. I think you ask a question that cannot be answered. It is like comparing beautiful women. (Masculine point of view here of course.) They are different, but each has a lot going for it. If you are trying to select one over the other, I am afraid I cannot help you. I settled the issue by seeing both.

Hi Mike,
what a question, I have had the opportunity to see both and really get a feel for both, I agree with the previous post, there is no right answer. BUT Banff is more majestic (Lake Louise is breath taking) I did not feel that way in the Swiss alps. The wild aspect of Banff is also different from the Alps, which feels more urban or rural for lack of a better expression. We all enjoyed the cowbells in the Alps which is certainly unique...I cannot figure out how come the cows are not crosseyed from listening to those bells all day long....like the previous poster, you will have to see them both in your lifetime!!!
