Banff in May
Hi,
I am thinking of a trip to Banff in the middle of May. Looked at the Banff Inn on Banf St. Seem resonable and near to everything. Any reccomendations and ideas for what to do, must sees etc. greatly appreciated. Seahatch. |
The Canadian Rockies are beautiful on any day of the year, but I don't think May is the optimum time to visit them. The reason is that the mountain lakes, which I consider to be the frosting on the cake, are not yet thawed. Therefore May is too early to see the lakes' legendary turquoise colour.

Thanks for that Judy. Looks like loads of useful info to browse thru.

The downside of visiting in May is that alot of the trails to the natural sites may still have some snow on them or be covered in mud. There is still the potential in May to get a few last snow flurries and the potential of alot of rain. Having said that, hotel rooms will be cheaper and there will be less crowds to deal with then in the summer. Mid-June through September really shows the area at its most beautiful - unless of course you're a big skiier, then the winter months are for you.

We are also thinking about visiting
canadian rockies end of May and first week of June. What's the weather like then and any chance of lake louise or lake moraine being thawed out by early June? |
We were at the summit of Sulphur Mountain in Banff June 12, 2004 and had snow squalls come over us. Some of the trails were not open because there was still a meter of snow on them.
