Authentic Toronto
Hello, I'm doing my thesis this year on finding raw,Authentic Toronto. You could help me a lot by answering one simple question: If you want to show someone an authentic or real Toronto, what one place you recommend? please answer it on my blog : http://rawtoronto.blogspot.com/
Thanks a bunch :) |
Good design is hard.
I can't figure out your web site and how to comment. Anyway, St.lawrence Market, preferably on Saturday morning./ |
Your question is hardly stated in academic terms. Could you first discover something that is "cooked" or "inauthentic" Toronto? Are you in high school? I certainly hope so. Your site is mysterious.

The pronunciation of the City's name by Torontonians is "authentic Toronto": Taa..ron...no. No "r" in the first syllable; no "t" at the end.
Non-Torontonians say "Tore...ont...Toe" or "Taa...Ron..Toe". Torontonians say "Taa..ron..no" |
I say Taa-ma-toe....
|
ha ha, Garyt22!
And I, Luddite that I am, figured out how to post! |
OB,
"Trawna" is also an acceptable pronunciation among Torontonians. |
ha, ha, ha...Trawna...that's my Taa..ron..no....sort of.. "no"..."na"...I don't very often hear "na".
Maybe Traw..no. Usually I hear Taa...ron...no |
How 'bout actually helping?
BAK |
I would show them the corner of Spadina and Queen St W and have them walk a few blocks in each direction... Chinatown, Kensington Market, Queen W, Entertainment, and Fashion... there you can see the "melt" of Ta-ron-tee in its full international sandwich...
|
Brian, What do you mean?
|
I'd also recommend walking Queen Street West from the Trinity-Bellwoods Park are (west of Bathurst) through to Dufferin
|
My partner always suggests that visitors to Toronto take the Queen streetcar from one end of the line to the other. It takes you through different neighbourhoods and the downtown area, giving you a good look at the city, and of course the streetcar is a Toronto experience in itself.
|
Well, I can't figure out the website either but I'd add Honest Ed's at Bloor and Bathurst.
For music, the Silver Dollar and Grossmans, both on Spadina Avenue. |
Take the subway to Bloor and Jane, then walk back east to High Park, south through the park to The Queensway, and then the Queen syreetcar back (east) to downtown.
|
The College streetcar 506 from Main station goes through a big chunk of the city - upper Beach, India Bazaar, Vietnamese area, Broadview Chinatown, Regent Park and Cabbagetown in one section, Maple Leaf Gardens, past Yonge Street, past the Banting and Best Institutes, Queen's Park, University of Toronto, Spadina, Little Italy, Portuguese area (not sure if it has a name or not), over the rail bridge to High Park/Parkdale and ends in High Park.
|
Kensngton market is a has-been slum dead for 20 years. Honest Ed's is a morgue - there are not 10 people in there at the same time. Go to the courts - sit in on some trials at Old City Hall or the major courtroom on University. A news article today says toronto is the most miserable city in the country - not much of a suprise - but that is probably (outside of the courts) the most "authentic" thing about a boring, unpleasant NDP driven, uninteresting city.
|
merck, Who said that Toronto is "the most miserable" city in the country? It may not be a surprise to you but to me Toronto is anything but "miserable", "unpleasant" & "boring". And, then we have you complaining about misery & your antidote is to send people to the courts. Are you nuts?? Maybe a tour of Osgoode Hall on Queen St. But, to suggest that people go to Old City Hall or to the Courthouse on University Ave for "authentic" Toronto is just plain weird.
|
This merckxxx character has been doing these posts for a while... must be a leafs fan... they are usually miserable...
|
oh, I guess I must have missed his/her lunacy. Are the post always "anti-Toronto"?
