ATMs in Quebec City didn't work. Why?
Not just one or two. Seven of them this Monday and Tuesday. Why? We had to use some Exchange place with not so great exchange rate plus 4% fee.

Where are you from? Most ATM's in Canada are Cirrus or Plus or Interac. Does your card have Cirrus, Interac or Plus? Look on the back, it should say there. How many digits is your pin #? Mine is four but I don't think you would have a problem with 3, 4 or 5.

Curious though. I had a problem with my Royal Bank Gold Visa in NZ and so did my friend. Neither one would work but fortunately we both had Scotiabank Visas and had no problem with those.

Dear Traveller
I'm from the US and my card is cirrus with four digit pin. We used this card in Greece, France, Portugal and even Kenya without any problems.
Fortunatelly it was our short weekend visit and we had some US cash with us but often we don't carry it when we travel abroad.
Just recall that at least two of these machines did not work for others who tried to use them.

I've never had any problem with ATM machines in Quebec City, with either a Bank of America Visa card or a Royal Bank card. So whatever happened was not typical.
|
We had the same problem.
We returned last night
No more Quebec City for us but for other reasons
|
many old united states cards had 5 numbers and 4 is best for all travel.
|
We just returned from Quebec City and noticed that many machines had signs "out of order."

I've never tried to use an ATM in QC, but I've noticed in a couple of other cities in Canada that my Bank of America card works only at bank ATMs (not necessarily BofA), but not at commercial ATMS like those you find in stores (and in Pearson Airport).
