Another Weather Question!
 

I apologize for yet another weather question and realise it is almost impossible to gauge. However, we are Aussies planning a trip to the Rockies in mid August next year - the Rocky Mountaineer, then Banff,
Lake Louise etc.
I am hoping someone could give me a rough idea of what the temperatures might be for this time of year, we will be part of a tour group so no camping or need to know the reasons why it is not a good idea.
I presume layers will be the way to go but just can't gauge how heavy the layers will need to be.

So are you Aussies from Perth or Sydney?

The layering should be from hiking up a 1000 meter vertical trail in 30C with sunblock requirements, to walking on the flats with snow or rain at about zero.
What do you plan on doing?
I have no way of knowing what is comfortable for you. If your hotel room is nice and warm, that helps.
Going to Banff and Lake Louise is always a good idea, the scenery is incredible.

It gives detailed weather history, which while not predicting the future will give you a good idea of what to expect. For example, for Banff it shows that on August 18, the average high is 24C, with a historical range of 11C to 33C. The average low is 6C with a range of 0C to 13C. That is at the airport, of course, and at higher elevations, the temperatures will vary.

In August, in the day time, you can wear shorts and short-sleeved shirts.

Bring a sweater and an unlined windbreaker-style jacket.

It cools off in the evenings a bit, and long pants become a good idea. Same sweater and light jacket.

Women, for reasons I've never understood, seem fine during the day and into the evening with the same dress and bare legs, adding the sweater and/or a jacket into the evening.

Thank you all for your replies - that is exactly what I needed to know.
We actually come from south western New South Wales and as such are used fairly extreme temperatures although not as much as I would expect in the Rockies.
