"An Innocent in Newfoundland"
 

Just starting this book by David W. McFadden - have any Newfoundlanders read it? - I know there are at least two of you who post here.

Several years ago I read his books "An Innocent in Ireland" and "An Innocent in Scotland" and enjoyed them a lot. There's also a Cuban book which the librarian told me she laughed out loud while reading.

He's going to read from the Cuban version at my local library in November and I plan to attend.

Sally, our book club read another book set in Newfoundland, "The Wreckage", by Michale Crummey. I loved it and have his first book, "River Thieves", to read as well. Maybe we can exchange books after you're finished yours.

Also recommended to me by two people at the Holy Trinity annual book sale was "The Colony of Unrequited Dreams" so I have that too. One of the main characters is Joey Smallwood.

Hi Moolyn - David McFadden's books are travel-type ... I get almost everything I read from the library and I expect they'd revoke my lending privileges if I traded them with you.

I'll request those books you mention as soon as I get through the rest of the books I've got on hold.

I did have a look at it...it was a long time ago and my only concrete impression is of one memorable bar scene...but that could apply to almost any book about NL I have ever read.

I'd also give "The Wreckage" a serious nod. Michael Crummey is a marvelous writer and Wreckage is a wonderful read ... so true to the spirit of Newfoundland. He read excerpts at our book club meeting awhile back. You might also like to try one by other Newfoundland writers: Bernice Morgan's 'Random Passage' which was made into a wonderful tv mini series; Kenneth Harvey's 'Inside' .. a more serious read ... was long listed for the Giller Prize. Harvey has won numerous national and international awards. Joel Hynes "Down to the Dirt" is described as a sexy, funny and street wise novel ... true! ... and also a winner of several awards. Hope this helps.
