accomodations in Toronto
I am looking for a moderately priced hotel in the downtown Toronto area, where we can walk to may sites that is family friendly for two adults, one 11 year old, and one 14 year old.
|
David - re this posting and your resort one - could you be more specific regarding price - how much per night?
|
Strathcona Hotel and Hotel Victoria are the lowest priced decent hotels that meet your needs. Any "Choice" hotel is good value, and several are in good locations. (Choice, Comfort Inn, Journey's End, etc.)

BAK

You might want to check the Novotel which is right downtown and should be reasonable. It has great rooms, good breakfast service in lobby Cafe Nicole, undergound parking, and easy access to all of downtown. Some good Irish pubs in the neighborhood as well. It is a pleasant hotel and will fit your needs well. I would recommend it highly based on my experiences there.

I just returned from 5 nights at the Bond Place Hotel. I booked through Lodging.com and got a small room with two double beds for about 83US$ including tax per night. The hotel was clean and very conveniently located downtown - right around the corner from the Hard Rock Cafe and loads of shops and subway.

Agree on Novotel - very nice and good location and good prices for very nice room and good breakfast in lobby cafe. You won't go wrong with this one

Without prejudice to any hotels mentioned in any of the above, I merely want to call your attention to the Neill Wycik, a coop that is a college dorm that operates as a hotel at other times. We stayed a week (with breakfast) at the cost of one night at a 4 or 5 star hotel. Wycik was spartan but clean (especially shared baths. Toronto was very hot during our stay so we bought an inexpensive table fan that did the job. It ain't the Ritz but was just great for these 75-year-olds

Consider the Courtyard by Marriott and the Marriott Eaton Centre for location and price. Ofter available through Priceline, see www.biddingfortravel.com
|
Agree with Mark. Just returned from a stay at the Courtyard via Priceline for $30 a night. We travel to Toronto frequently and have stayed in many hotels. While this one didn't have the amenities of the other (body lotion, etc.) our room was as nice or nice than those we paid 5 times that much for.

I would also recommend the Delta Chelsea. It is very family oriented, with pools and such for kids, it's also close to everything. It's only possible downside is that the neighboring area on Yonge, while completely safe, has a very "Times Square" feel to it.

As for the Courtyard, I have also bid on Priceline for it and found it fine. The nieghborhood is somewhat similar to the Delta Chelsea (in fact they are close), the court has the added advantage (or disadvantage depending on your outllook) of being in the Gay Village.
|
If the Courtyard is in a "gay village" it did not impact on our stay. We didn't seem any same sex couples holding hands or "making out" on the street. However, we didn't see any hetero-sexual couples doing it either. We were very comfortable with the neighborhood.

The gays in Toronto are a tame species. They are not know to attack the heterosexuals staying in Courtyards by Marriott so have no fear!

Just got back from Toronto today after a short 6 day round-robin of Toronto - Niagra - Upstate New York - back to Toronto.

Being originally from Rochester, NY have been to Niagra and Toronto many times but not for about 15 years since moving to Dallas.

In planning my trip I used Fodors to get lot's of other first hand info which has been very helpful.

The main reason for this post is because I stayed at the Strahcona while in Toronto. Even though I had seen a couple of posts that the hotel did not offer the greates in service .. I choose it as it appeared to be a good property.

I was not wrong. Strathcona was an excellent value. I upgraded to the Kind Exec and with AAA it was about $100 per day (an excellent deal in Toronto).

The service I recieved was excellent. Everyone was very helpful and ... for Toronto ... quite friendly. While there I used them for choosing restaurants and one night, after an inquiry, under my door was a list of several restaurants that they had gone onto the internet to get info on, printed out the pages and had delivered to my room.

The hotel location was excellent. Right next to the Royal York and across the street from Union Station. Everything that my girlfriend and I wanted was within walking distance from the horbour to theater to transprotation to restaurants.

As for our next trip to Toronto ... I don't even have to shop and will use the Strathcona as my hotel base.

Excellent hotel ...
