A trip to Vancouver island.
I’m from the Midwest and my family is planning a get together on Vancouver island for the beginning of August. After flying into Seattle and taking the ferry across to Victoria we’ll have about 6 days on the island. We like to do more outdoorsy things and are planning on going kayaking, salmon and or halibut fishing and hiking and are open to many other suggestions.
Where would be a good part of the island to stay? Currently we are thinking of renting a house in the East Sooke area. Is that a good location? Or should we buckle down and make the 5+ hour drive to Tofino? Is there another part of the island that we should visit? Having never visited Vancouver Island I’d appreciate any suggestions. Both on where to stay and what to do. Thank You! |
I love the East Sooke area - the shoreline is beautiful,
there are nice secluded beaches, East Sooke Regional Park is a great place to spend a day, the road to Port Renfrew has a great hiking trail and beaches. If you want to eat world-class cuisine there's Sooke Harbour House and for a great meal in a funkier West Coast atmosphere you can go to Point-no-Point. I know there are other terrific restos but these two I can vouch for. The great thing about staying in that area is the proximity for trips to Victoria and surroundings. But Tofino - ah, Tofino - that's a whole 'other story...... but it is out of the 'mainstream' for a first time visit. |
You will never regret going to Tofino. It is a bit of a drive, but it is a scenic drive. I'd vote for Tofino.

Stay a night or two in Victoria then head over to Tofino.

I'd stay at Pacific Sands at long beach(tofino)
