Hi,

I'm interested in a scenic train trip near the Jasper/Banff area for early March. The only thing I can find is from Jasper to Edmonton, but that requires an overnight. I'm looking for a one day thing. Any ideas?

There are no one-day roundtrip trains to either Banff (from Calgary) or Jasper (from Edmonton). Via Rail (Canada's national passenger rail service) only goes between Edmonton and Jasper. The Rocky Mountaineer has Edmonton/Jasper and also Calgary/Banff, but they are an expensive luxury train which only does multi-day excursions. There is no passenger train service at all between Jasper and Banff.

You might find something close to what you want in a bus tour. Here's a link to Brewster's day-tours:

Agree with Shelli. The Canadian goes from Toronto - Vancouver through Edmonton and Jasper on the old Canadian National route and no longer goes through Banff (and hasn't for years). The Rocky Mountaineer is your other option.

For the Jasper area, try Sundog Tours or the Jasper Adventure Centre (googling should bring those up). One or both of these companies offers a package that includes one way on the train west from Jasper, and then pick up by van to be driven back to Jasper.

We went on the Rocky Mountaineer train from Banff to Vancouver. We had the gold leaf service. It was fantastic. Memories stay forever. It was worth every dollar.
