What to wear in Sydney and Melbourne the next two weeks?

Good morning everyone

Soon I arrive! Sydney and Melbourne.

Is is solidly "sundress and sandals/flipflops" season? Will I be happy to have at least a pair or two of long pants/jeans with me? How about anything long enough to cover my arms either day or night?

Outerwear: If I bring just a rain-windbreaker (no lining at all, just a shell) and a jean jacket, will I be sorry? I will be wearing something more substantial on the plane because I will be coming to and from winter but it would be too much to wear once I am actually in Australia.

I will be mostly urban on this trip. Maybe a day in the Blue Mountains, possibly, and one day bus tour of the GOR. Lots of walking, it's my thing.

Thank you.

We were in Sydney at about this time of year 4 years ago. Honestly, no-one cares - just be comfortable. It was quite hot during the day, but I can't remember what it was like at night - not cold! I wouldn't bring the jean jacket - the shell should be enough. I would just bring a couple of long-sleeved shirts to wear over a T to layer up in the evening and a couple of pairs of long trousers/capris. Along with the odd dress/skirt, that's it.

if you are walking a lot easily washable T shirts would be a good idea - most places have washers and dryers you can use; it might be a good idea to check.

Check predicted temperatures on www.bom.gov.au

I’m a local, wearing light trousers & s long sleeved tee shirt at 8:30 am. The sea breeze is cool. Yesterday, it was high 20’s in the CBD, summer dress. I often take my jeans or other lightweight jacket,as it can be cool mornings, evenings & in air conditioning.

Early December is just the beginning of summer and can be unpredictable. Showers predicted here in Sydney later this week.

Probably just me, but I personally don’t think “flip flops/ thongs/Janda last”are the best footwear away from the beach. Not enough support, too likely to catch or slip on busy footpaths - and I’d rather avoid that, especially on holidays. I’d choose sandals or walking shoes.

Flygirl - note: We use Celsius, not Fahrenheit.

Melbourne can be quite a lot hotter/colder/wetter/drier than Sydney. Often all in the one day.

Thank you so much! I'll pack for both. I did already have the packing heavy on the sundresses although with a jean jacket that's usually fine. And for day walking I tend to wear sneakers with the dress. A few of the dresses are 3/4 length sleeves. Plus I'll have a few scarves. And of course I'll have Ts and at least one light sweater.

I just spoke to one of my local friends. He's having a recurrence of his health issues - we talked for about an hour. He hasn't even told his wife yet as he doesn't want to worry her. Since I had already made my hotel reservations for the entire Sydney part of my trip, I told him no question I'll just stay in the hotel but I hope to see you guys as much as possible. He's offering to drive me around quite a bit but I'm going to wait until I see him. I'd rather he stay local and not overtax himself if he's going through this. I'm sure I'll see them for dinners at least though.

Sorry about your friend. The drive around may be a welcome distraction for him. It’s always fun to show our friends around our home town, isn’t it?

Sorry about your friend, as well. I agree with Bokhara2, he'll enjoy your company, welcome being able to confide in you, and relish in sharing local things/attractions that he loves.

I'll be returning to Melbourne myself for a visit, so I've been looking at weather reports. It's predicted to be warmer than normal in Melbourne (and we're experiencing similar conditions in the south of New Zealand.) This is a good article:
http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/me...24-gzsjsk.html
And another:
http://www.news.com.au/technology/en...ec7f9792ac6759

Might want to bring a sun hat. (Though sun hats, sunscreen, and shades are widely available.) As Bokhara2 recommends for Sydney, good walking shoes with support are a must for Melbourne. When visiting, I've walked loads (and it sounds like you will, too). It's a fun, interesting city for walking. But they've also got a great tram system. I'm not a fashion-oriented person by any stretch of the imagination, but Melbournians' fashion sense reminds me much of my hometown of San Francisco or of one of the large Spanish cities (casual, comfortable, but stylish).

I was in Melbourne at the end of November two years ago and also three years ago, and found it warm then. There were some pesky flies on parts of the Great Ocean Road. They're harmless, but annoying.

Sorry about your friend, flygirl. we too had friends driving us around Sydney which was great but if that doesn't work out, the boats are a terrific way of getting to see the area; they link up with buses too so you can do some nice round trips. Getting a day or even a longer pass for the boats can be a good idea.

Hi everyone!

Packed. I even have some more room, despite about 7 pairs of shoes (no boots) and three books which will be gifts.

Flight has departed SFO en route to BWI. Only ten minutes late. That's my plane!

SFO-SYD leg is almost 40 minutes delayed, as of a few minutes ago. It is a 787.

That gives me a little buffer from an hour-ish to almost two hours connection time in SFO.

Assuming BWI - SFO leg isn't crazy late, I will be in SYD Wednesday AM.

Have a great trip, and I hope that you've got enough clothes [and shoes!] packed in that case.

Seven pairs of shoes! I love it! I think you'll be covered for every occasion. You've also made me feel better about my usual five pairs of packed shoes and sandals.

Happy travels!

Two cases! Carry on and checked.

I'll have to check when we land - 7 shoes may include those on my feet.

And I didn't wear a winter coat, it was almost 60 at home so I just put on my rain shell over a sweater and scarf. I may freeze on the way back though. Hope not.

En route to Sydney right now!

I had to look up where you live, flygirl [and then look up what DMV means!] This reminded me of a holiday we took about 30 years ago to the Gambia; it was January but we thought that we'd taken enough warm clothes with us for when we got home, but as we landed we saw that the whole of the SE of England was entirely white. There was so much snow we had to spend the night on the taxi-driver's spare bed, and when we eventually picked up our car and drove it home, we left our car on the main road and walked across the show field that lay between it and the road to our house to our neighbours' 4x4. Needless to say we were pretty wet and cold by the time we got home, only to find that the house was frozen solid.

Happy days!

I hope you have a better homecoming than we did on that occasion.

So true.

It's 35c (95f) in Melbourne currently. Probably stay hot for awhile but we can get rain at any moment. In the course of 2 weeks, we most likely will (and I'm hoping) to get a cool change go through.

Unless you're dining at Vue de Monde or something, nice shorts and t-shirts, cooler shoes are fine for eating out even in the CBD. Pretty much how we went out to Tonka and a musical at HMT this past weekend
