What to do in Wanaka

We will be in Wanaka late Feb. and we aren't into extreme sports or the very physical..Has anyone been on some good walks (1hour or slightly longer), tours or other activities for the not so young? I know about Puzzlingworld. We're heading towards Haast. thanks

Lots of nice walks in the area. Suggest you pick up a walking map at the DOC office once you arrive.

Here's what we did during our visit in August (we're also not-so-young).

The Rob Roy Valley Track, located west of Wanaka:

This track crosses the West Matukituki River via a swing bridge, and then climbs through a gorge to the top of the valley, which offers views of the Rob Roy Glacier. It's the most popular track in the area and not particularly easy, but you can walk a portion and turn back if you don't want to walk the whole track.

The track is marked 3-4 hours return; it took us just under four hours (10 km, 6.5 miles), but we're getting old.

The Diamond Lake Walk, which is located 12 km from Wanaka on Mt. Aspiring Road:

You can reach Diamond Lake in about 10 minutes (uphill), then continue on to the Wanaka Viewpoint for some incredible views of Lake Wanaka. There's a lower circuit and the Rocky Hill Summit Circuit, so you have a few options here.

The Diamond Lake/Rocky Hill Summit Circuit is marked a three hour return. We walked all of it in under two and a half hours (7 km, 4.5 miles).

If you like beer, you might want to check out Wanaka Beerworks near the airport.

Wanaka is also home to Rippon Winery. They're the only winery in NZ that makes Osteiner, a German style white.

We enjoyed the Amigo Cafe and the Bombay Palace.

Here are some more short walks that I have yet to try out myself (next time!):

Mt Iron Track - 3 km, the track is located 1 km east of Wanaka

Outlet Track - 1 hour, 2.5 km - follows the Cultha River from Lake Wanaka to Albert Town.

Waterfall Creek - 1 hour, 2.5 km - starts from the west end of Roys Bay via the beach from Wanaka Township.

The above walks are in and around Wanaka. Highly recommend you also check out the Matukituki Valley tracks located about an hour's drive from Wanaka - beautiful area.

For more suggestions, check out www.doc.govt.nz

On your drive from Haast, suggest you also check out the Monro Beach Walk (40 minute return - easy) which is located north of Haast Township.

Thanks for your help. I'll definitely get a copy of the DOC publication. It's that I suddenly realised that I didn't have anything planned for our day in Wanaka. We're always on the look our for that off the beaten track place that only those in the know are familiar with.
