Most tours to the Reef leave from Carins or Port Douglas. I know of none that actually leave from Sydney. You might want to look into a trip to one of these cities and then there are numerous Reef tours that leave everyday.
It is the most beautiful snorkeling I have ever seen.
One more thing......While in Sydney, we stayed at the Furama, Darling Harbor. Not a very nice hotel and I would not recommend it to anyone. You might want to stay clear of that one.
Have a great time. Sue

Kathy

You can fly from Sydney to either Proserpine (with Qantas) or Hamilton Island (with Ansett Airlines), both in the Whitsundays. Hamilton Island involves a boat trip to another island or the mainland and while it costs a few bucks, it's a very pleasant way to travel. You can then stay at an island resort (Club Med and similar) or a hotel or resort on the mainland.

If you want to go further north you can fly to Cairns and then bus or drive to Port Douglas (about 2 hours). There are lots of hotels but can be a bit expensive. There are many reef cruises leaving Port Douglas every day. (Quicksilver I think is an operator.)

There are hotels all up and down the coast as well as dotted on islands. You should have little trouble picking up a package deal when in Sydney.

Have a great trip - it's a nice part of the world. Melinda

On the website www.travel.com.au there are package tours from Sydney to GBR advertised. I do not know if it only iar and board or if there is anything else included. I am also looking into the best way to get there and back form Sydney etc.
Green Island off Cairns is great. The trip out to the Barrier Reef is about 1 - 2 hours. We hated Quicksilver because there were so many people on the boat. We did do a sail boat cruise with them to a Sand Quay. That was very good. Not very many people and you could snorkel with a marine biologist expalining everything.
