visiting the Gold Coast in August?

anyone who has gone at this time?

1. good time to visit? heard it's kinda cold, can get colder if extreme temperatures arise. don't like the idea of packing much.
2. wondering if my mom would enjoy the area, cuz she's not more of a beach person. she likes to see historical stuff/be near the city cuz there's more to do?
3. how far would it take to get to the red centre/top end and great barrier reef?
4. also heard going at this time is more expensive in terms of tours/attractions?

anyone with any info would be appreciated.

thank you!

EOB, This is not yet peak tourist season in that part of Australia. In the north it is peak time but the price of tours does not vary greatly. One would fly to those other locations. It is a great time to visit northern Australia but it can be windy on the reef so, if not a good sailor allow, yourself a few days leeway.

This site will give you a good summary of past weather for the Gold Coast http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/averag...0717_All.shtml

I suggest you read a few of the trip reports on this forum, do a bit of research and then come back with some specific questions where we might be of value to you.

We have visited my in-laws on the Gold Coast in July and August many times. I suppose it depends on where you're coming from but I'm sure that most people would consider the winters there to be very mild (days in the 70's F, low 20's C). It's not unusual to see people sunning themselves on the beach in swimsuits.

In my opinion, the Gold Goast is a great base for seeing a very beautiful part of Australia. It's more than the beaches, it's the mountains, waterfalls, countryside and rainforests of the beautiful hinterland. Also, Brisbane is just a short train ride away.
