Transportation from the airport to the Rocks (Australian Heritage Hotel)?

We can't seem to find out how to get from the airport to the Rocks area (Australian Heritage Hotel) We know there is a train, but according to some of the posters,it is very expensive. Could we take a bus and have them drop us off at the hotel? We need help!

The rail ticket will be $11.80 one way each. Taxi, not sure but probably about $30.00 which will take you to your door.

The station is called Circular Quay and is about a kilometre or so from your hotel. This is a walking trip, no public tranport options from Circular Quay to Cumberland Street.

Red or Green travel passes are available from the airport that can incorporate single or return trips to airport( must be specified at purchase) within a week of purchase. They include bus/train/ferry transport within a designated radius dependant on the colour code. Red small area, green a bit bigger radious, then yellow, purple etc.

If you plan to do short bus/train and ferry rides during your stay yhen they are recommended.

the choice really will depend on whether you feel comfortable carrying your luggage about 1km from railway. It may be a bit less but if memory serves me right you need to walk up quite a large stairway .

Forgot to mention bus options from airport. Basically none except hotel shuttles. There is one public transport bus that takes you to the railway line outside the expensive airport line but then you need to change to a train and then to another bus to get you closer to your hotel. So it will be bus/train/bus. Even then you will still have a walk either from Kent or George street where the bus stops are.

Hi 646,

I dunno where you're coming from, but it's still a very long flight, no matter where!

You can take the train and lug your bags, you can take the shuttle and sit at the airport waiting for enough people to fill it up before they leave...but for me, all I want to do is take a hot shower, so I opt for a taxi!

Hi, 646wyck!

I am very interested that you have finally chosen the Australian Hotel... will be eager to hear your impressions!

I am always exhorting people to avoid the expensive train from the airport and the taxi fares, which are alos exhorbitant, and instead try the government bus, which will drop you at either Rockdale Station or Bondi Junction Station, from which you can then get a train to your destination. This certainly is the cheapest option. However, in your particular case, I would say.... it's not worth the hassle. All that lugging baggage on and off trains, and then trying to find the Australian, which (as I told you) is tucked away behind the Rocks in a tiny street. Even the airport train isn't really that satisfactory for you, as it will only take you to Circular Quay Railway Station, after which you have a six-minute walk to the Australian; and, since you don't know the way, that would end up taking you twelve minutes.
There are private airport shuttle buses to the Rocks, but I think they cost about ten dollars each, and maybe they won't take you as far as the Australian (I see them frequently on George St north, but the Australian is an uphill walk from there).

So, I recommend the most expensive way, for once. Grab a cab!

I hope you are very clear on what aussie pub accommodation means...because that is what you will have at the Australian.

In any case if you are interested in cheap transport from the airport to the hotel drop me an e mail.

Unless johhj can help you I would suggest you take Alan's advice re the taxi. One further note to Alan's is that if you did decide to take the 400 bus from the airport to Bondi Junction, you will still have to change at Town Hall to get to Circular Quay and then a walk to your hotel.I think you would be far more comfortable spluging on a cab ( although I suspect you may have to pay more than the $30). Good luck!

John's point about pub accommodation is a good one, and I do hope that I have, in previous posts, "prepared" you for the differencers you are going to find between the Australian and, say, the Shangri-La just down the road. The most obvious difference is the size: while the Shangri-La stretches upawards to impossible heights, seeking better and better vies, the Australian is just two storeys. The bottom one is the bar and a restaurant. Above this are the bedrooms and bathrooms. A staircase. not a lift, connects the two.

One thing that may set your mind at rest which I noticed only yesterday when I walked past the Australian: it has a banner outside proudly announcing that it is the latest winner of the award of "Best Pubstay Accommodation" (forget which organisation awarded this... hopefully not they themselves!)

When I passed, at around 6:15, the restaurant downstairs was full, so was the bar, the kerbside tables were all packed, and everybody seemd to be having a fine old time. Up at the Shangri-La the limousines were pulling up and uniformed bellhops were there to greet the arriving guests, smiling above the din of the harbour bridge tollgates directly opposite the front door (you don't really see these, however, as they are a little higher than the Shangri-La's doorway; what you see is a bleak concrete wall in which is installed some kind of power station that looks not unlike something in a concentration camp: welcome to high-priced Sydney.)

Alan,
I was in town this morning and curiosity got the better of me....I went in at the Australian and asked to see the accomodation.

I was impressed....with the qualifications you have mentioned above it was very well done...neat ,clean heritage furnishings. Nice breakfast/lounge room.

In my time I have stayed at some pretty basic country pubs....the Imperial at Wee Waa comes to mind...this was a world apart from that

As I walked back towards wynyard by the shangri-la, I dodged a coach load of japanese tourists heading out for the day.I know where I would want to stay.

John

After reading this thread I had the same thought! To pop in and ask for an inspection. I agree with you in that if you find a good pub accomodation it can add a lot to a stay rather than a mass market high rise. I too had a bad experience in pub accomodation once and only will do it now on recommendation.

I hope 646 has a great stay, the rooms look really nice on the website and by all accounts their pizza is to die for!

John, are you going to send us a cheap way to get to the Australian? What about the green and yellow bus from the airport? Would it drop us anyplace near the Australian or the Shangri La?Many thanks for your efforts.

The cheapest way is the government bus #300 or #400? can't recall. Anyway get the bus either direction to Burwood or Bondi Junction. Burwood route ask to be dropped off at Rockdale, At Rockdale or Bondi Junction catch the train to Town Hall station and change for a train that stops at Circular Quay. Then get off the train and look over the wall and allow your jaw to drop at the sight of the most beautiful natural harbour any city in this world is situated on and thank your lucky stars this will be your address for a few days.

Then the hard bit, walk down around the Quay then cut across the park to George Street, Proceed up a while until you see a stairway up the Argyle Cut, walk up and your hotel is either right or left. I can't remember which one it is.

But the truth be know for two people this will save maybe $10-$15 on a cab that will drop you at the door.

Take a cab!!!

And enjoy!

i live reasonably conveniently to the airport and city.If the timing is right I could give you a lift from the airport to the Australian. I might even bore you to tears with an orientation to sydney.

I am not the eternal diplomat like Alan but my wife says I am reasonably allright.

I can guarantee:
-you can't beat the price
-I won't try to sell you the harbour bridge or a time share at hervey bay.
