taxi cost from cruise dock to airport in papeete
How much should a budget for a taxi from the cruise dock to the airport? Do they take american dollars or will I need to get the local currency before I get off the ship?

According to our best memories, it is only a short distance -- no more than three miles -- from the airport to the cruise docks in the downtown wharf area. Surely, no more than $5. We found American dollars were gladly accepted -- no, eagerly accepted. Everything was available in either currency.

It may only be three miles but you'll pay around US$20 - taxis in Papeete are a ripoff. If you haven't got too much luggage, you can catch a bus to the airport from the market for about a dollar. Well, if you're paying in foreign currency (U.S. Dollars), they might want two dollars but that's max. During the day they leave every five or ten minutes, in the evening every 20 minutes or so. Pick up the Moon guide http://snurl.com/39ni which tells you things like this and will save you its $18 purchase price real fast.

I just paid $18 for a minivan taxi, shared by eight of us fellow passengers, for the airport-pier ride. That's about $2.25 each! Getting local currency gets you coming and going, and the cab drivers love US $$. Keep a LOT of ONEs, though. They NEVER have change for a five or ten or twenty. After your cruise you could ride the bus. This is a little cheaper, with the added flexibility of going where you want to without looking for a fare-share (like that!?)
