Going to Tasmania for work in Hobart on 21 and 22 February . Booked the Henry Jones Art Hotel in Hobart , at which I have previously stayed and enjoyed.

But I need advice about options in the 4 star + range ( A$300 range per night) to stay in Launceston on 18th and possibly 19th . Not been to stay or eat there for years .

Will fly over to Launceston late afternoon on 18th with my partner , whose birthday it is on 19th , pick up a hire car and drive down to Hobart on 19th or 20th .So I want to book somewhere good to stay ( in the ilk of the Henry Jones) and to eat . We want to look around Launceston ( have been before and liked it a lot )but clearly have to be selective .

I am being vague about whether to stay 1 or 2 nights in Launceston as I do like Salamanca Market and all around inner Hobart . Am also thinking of perhaps a night en route to Hobart in one of the national trust properties along or near the History Highway .

All too short I know .

Not sure if this is what you had in mind, but we really enjoyed our stay at Rosevears Estate a few years back. We never tried the restaurant, but it looks inviting.

Some food suggestions in Launceston

Stillwater at the Mill, near Penny Royal World for fine dining
Hallam’s fish and chips – either go to the restaurant or the take-away place next door
Josef Chromy vineyard in Relbia (near Airport) he was involved with Pipers Brook, but now owns his own place. The sparkling is excellent
Black Cow for great, grass fed steak – the best in town. In central Launceston
Pierre’s for lunch, you’ll need to book

Mel I think I want to stay close to town and look around it .I recall fabulous housing architecture that in some ways reminded me of Sanfrancisco ginger bread wooden houses - not exactly but you no doubt get the drift . And I have never been into Cataract Gorge .So even though everything is relatively easy to get to and from in Tasmania ( we drove from Hobart to Launnie and back in a day last time and comfortably with many stops )I think I want to see the town itself . Hope I am not disappointed .

It was in Winter that I was last in Tassie so looking forward to warmer weather .

There was a chap selling crayfish out of a caravan on the road between Elephant Pass at Grey and St Helens. Best I've ever tasted. Pulled up under a shady tree, rug on the ground, crays, fresh bread rolls, ... heaven!

Hi John, according to an article in Gourmet Traveller, Launceston has better late, late night food shopping than anywhere in the country. They recommend in particular this deli as the best 24-hour corner store:
